In theory, could Krita be ported to iPadOS?

Thanks for your response. Expanding Krita, while keeping the GPL license, certainly has it’s challenges! Big tech tends to be ‘our way or the highway’, rigidly, so I agree that it’s hard to see how it could work out about Apple, particularly in a way that continues to honour the GPL, and, as you say, Apple would refuse system access anyway.

With you explaining why Apple could be highly unlikely, that draws attention to how unique and impressive the combination of the GPL, and Krita being professional-level software, is. Reading around lots of places over recent years, increasingly people are more license and privacy aware and moving away from closed source softwares/subscriptions, so growing the number of users via GPL could well be slower and steadier, but could end up with a larger amount of happy users, and the donations/contributions that come with that. People are really impressed and excited by Krita 5, so it’s great seeing the expansion already happening.

So if I get it right, there is a build of krita that can run an iOS device, however it can’t save files.
I am looking at sideloading a version of krita on ios15.
Is it possible to get access to an ipa file of krita to see if ot can be sideloaded?

Some small suggestions. can krita optimize the brushes on surface pro ? Everything is fine, but there are some problems with stroke delivery.

 Hello @111, nice to see you back here!

Would it be possible for you to start a new topic for your question and describe your problems in connection with your Surface Pro?
There you would have to tell us which version of Krita and which operating system you are using, and also which brushes are causing you which problems, so that we have some clues to understand your difficulties and possibly be able to help you.
I think the most appropriate sub-forums are “Bundles and resources help” or “General Questions”, in the “Support and Advice” section.
Because you are here in a topic that has nothing to do with your question.

thank you

It seems that there are good news?

EU regulations have forced Apple to open up to third-party app stores and side loading by 2024.

So Krita will be able to make its way to the iPad(of course as long as you guys are willing to make it so).

Cheers!

Ooooo I would be so happy if Krita did come to the App Store, and besides, paying for a one time fee would be no problem.

EU regulations have forced Apple to open up to third-party app stores and side loading by 2024.

Finally, some people in EU area can use Epic store (instead of App store) on iPad since August 2024. I don’t know much about the rules, but has this resolved issues such as the GPL?

I am Japanese and live in Japan, so DMA is not directly relevant me at present. However, Japanese gov plans to establish the law same as DMA by autumn or winter in 2025. I would like to see development progress at an early stage.

Hopefully one day we will be able to use Krita on the iPad.

The issue is not GPL the issue is that Apple App store requires explicit consent of all contributors and that is impossible to acquire from the hundreds of people who contributed to Krita in it’s lifetime.

They mean whether it is now possible to make, say Krita for iOS, but sell it on the Epic store. It is possible, but now the next issue: We don’t have anyone free to work on touch UI still, and its too big a topic for a volunteer.

Well at least now it’s not impossible

Thanks. I could understand current status of Krita in iOS. :star_struck:

This is very good news, I for one am interested in Krita for the iPad and in fact I think many others are too, I already paid for Procreate I wouldn’t mind paying for Krita as well

If Krita for iPads happens, count me in. I’ll be happy to pay a one time fee for each major version released.

if the issue is that the app store wont allow the software, what about jailbroken ipads?

No serious software provider will launch a product on the market that, in order to function at all, first requires a gigantic hole to be punched in the security architecture of the underlying hardware platform. A hole that even the most experienced users will find difficult to keep sealed.
The problem is not the users who can operate such a system satisfactorily and securely, they will only use Krita on the system and never connect it to the WWW again. New software and updates would only be installed on the system via external data carriers.
The problem is the users who don’t know what they’re doing and put themselves and others in danger just to be able to use Krita, because there’s nothing wrong with just checking your email or doing a bit of surfing, jailbreak or not - they don’t care because they don’t understand the situation. This may sound very abstract, but anyone with even 1 cent of sense on the subject of computer security will recognize this.

Great news! Would love to use Krita on iPad. Wouldn’t mind to pay for it to help development. I assume that iPad version would be limited for such platform (eg no scripts, no gmic, etc.) but that’s not a problem, Krita is still great without all that. Looking forward to more news!

This would be great! I have krita on my PC, but I usually work on my ipad with Clip Studio. I’ve always hoped to one day be able to use krita on the ipad as well.

In case this helps someone, I recently started using Krita on my Ipad with EasyCanvas2025 (i have an ipad pro m4, the previous version ‘easy canvas’ didn’t work but this one does and it’s great, no lag even using wifi). That app is like 12-13 bucks, one time payment. Just make sure to pick the highest resolution + maintain aspect ratio to get a nice image quality!
