I can confirm now after i try to disable Krita UI Redesign Plugin, the issue is gone

i’ve updated the latest version to work with the krita ui redesign plugin. you should be able to have it auto-select freehand brush tool now.
also regarding the switching brushes of the same slot on 2nd press, the Group option switches to the brush in the next group of the same slot while maintaining position. for example, 3rd brush of the first group will be switched to 3rd brush of the next group after pressing the same hotkey. if there is less than 3 brushes in the next group, the position will default to the first brush.
the Position option switches to the next brush in the same group of the same slot, which is the behaviour you were expecting. the difference to arrange brushes in same or different groups is that group provides another layer of switching and particularly for sync options you can choose to sync position(brushes of the same group) but not sync different groups of the same slot.
