I painted forest from some photographs on Tumblr. I was trying to perfect atmospheric light in painting. Any one has any suggestions on how to get the effect correct? On Blender, it is so easy to get. Blending modes is good but looks too perfect. Any tutorials on painting atmospheric light traditionally with brush strokes would be helpful. I guess if I know the theory, I would better emulate it with blending modes.
Also, any other critiques are welcome.

Hi! It’s a nice painting - I like the palette, and loose handling.
I’m not really sure what you mean by atmospheric lighting - that could cover so many different things!
Do you mean ‘diffused’ lighting - So the light source is being dispersed by the atmospheric conditions, such as fog or rain?
I notice the figure is carrying an umbrella - so maybe there should be more light reflected off wet areas? I think what you’ve already done with the soft bloom effect is quite effective - you could probably push that effect further. Mistiness generally adds atmosphere - that’s why they use smoke machines so much in movies - even when it’s unrealistic. Maybe having light-shafts pushing through the mist from one side could be effective.

Nice work , but I think in order to create the cold misty atmosphere I would have perhaps reduced the amount of green in the palette. It appears as you’ve progressed, the more green that’s been added, has lessened the appearance of mist. I think as well if the distant trees and the vanishing point of the road were more diffused and had less colour in them , it may have helped with that misty image your after. I hope my suggestions are taken in good faith , I m no expert, they were just my initial thoughts .Thanks

Yes, that’s exaclty what I am talking about. It helps in achieving a sense of scale in landscapes, but I haven’t fully mastered it yet.
I was going for more realistic and diffused light, so I think light shafts might be too dramatic.
I think you make a good point. Maybe I should lessen the saturation too like the value.
I was also thinking of using blur, but that would make the painting very artificial.

I agree with your view on the blur.it tends to Look artificial and turns your colours to soup. You could try a very reduced opacity of a colour matched colour using the select tool and a airbrush to add a glaze/transparency over the top in places on a different layer and build up a mist like effect using the transparent nature of the airbrush delivery.Good luck
Thanks, I will try that.
Landscpaes are so hard to paint because there is so much color and value variation.
