A possible book cover, created in Krita

I write as well as paint and it’s fun to see if I can come up with my own book covers. This was created by using an image of a building interior, a photograph of the sky and my own drawings.

Really nice, but one thing: If you’re ever gonna do some photobashing, try not to use potato-quality images. The low resolution of the background is kinda distracting.

Thank you, Kire. I did of course know that the quality of the architectural image wasn’t great. For some reason it didn’t bother me, but I’ll absolutely keep that in mind for the future.

Hi Eve
I’m writing my first book which is also Fantasy. I love your image. Can you give me some advice please as I’m new to Krita on how I can learn about creating book covers with Krita please? Or even learning more about Krita. I am a visual learner. I would love to know more about canvas size and file saving types for book covers and characters for website pages. Do you have any information on the best places I can go to for this please?
Many Thanks.

How I wish I could help you!. Honestly, I don’t know much about book cover design at all. I don’t know what size the image should be, or even what sort of image will sell a book. In this piece I painted an image that came from my story. I used various reference materials and from them create a composition. I think I only ever made two book covers and this one didn’t get used.

Maybe there are two things you need to learn. One would be how to use Krita and the other would be how to design book covers. I noticed there are lots of good Youtube videos that show how various artists use Krita. They’ve helped me a lot.

There is an editorial company called Reedsy who provide various videos on Youtube about aspects of publishing. I noticed they have at least one on how to design a book cover. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO3crII2piE

I hope that helps a little. The very best to you on your first novel!!

Hi Eve

Thanks ever so much for your kindness and thoughts.
That helps lots regarding Reedsy.
Your picture is beautiful, how long have you been digitally drawing and painting for?

I’ve had Krita since version 2.9 or earlier, but most of my artwork is done analog. In most ways I’m a real beginner with Krita, but I’ve been drawing and painting forever. My comfort with making art makes it easier to overcome my shortfall with Krita.

Yes, I can imagine all those art skills really help. My drawings/ paintings are nothing like this one of yours. They are more like a similar standard to the drawings on the Harry Potter covers, kind of child like but not really for little children but have enough detail so that you can see what has been drawn. I have only done 4 drawings so far with Krita (I’m still working on the fourth). I am not very good with faces so my facial expressions are simple, I think the simplicity also goes with the rest of the images so far. If I can work out how to upload them to my Krita profile I will do so as hopefully both myself and others will see my drawings improving over time as I learn more. It does really show that you have been an artist for a long time. Your picture is simply beautiful. I would be bowled over if I could ever reach your standard. Many thanks for your replies.
Have a lovely weekend.
Best wishes
