I’ve been trying for awhile now to get my Abr. Brushback to load on Krita. I use Linux mint. I’ve followed all the steps recommended from more than the guide on the official site but when I click import, none of the brushes show up, yet I tried on Gimp and it worked just fine. Help?
Hello @Cantarito and welcome to the forum ![]()
Which version of krita are you using and how is it installed on your computer?
It’s recommended that you use the appimage if you’re not already doing that.
Where did you get the brushpack from?
Is it possible for you to provide a link to this brushpack using a file download service/website in a reply here?
If it’s a paid for brushpack then you mustn’t do that.
Hello! Thank you for your reply!
I’m using the latest version and have installed through a Linux package.
I’ve never heard of appimage and I won’t know how to use it ![]()
Unfortunately I can’t give the brushes because they are paid but they’re from Wingfox.
Thank you!!
The appimage is a standalone packaged executable that is built with many libraries incorporated into it. It’s built by the krita developers themselves and is the recommended way of running krita on Linux.
You can download it from here: Krita Desktop | Krita
After you’ve downloaded it, you need to give it execution permissions and that is easily done via right-click → Properties → Permissions.
It will use the same configuration files and resources folder as the repository installed package.
I can’t find anyone called ‘Wingfox’ on this forum. Are they on deviantart or somewhere?
Can you give a link to the download website? That may have useful information.
Sorting out problems with .abr brushpacks is not my ‘area’ but other people on the forum may be able to help.
Can you upload screenshots of your File Manager showing what is inside the downloaded package (assuming it’s a.zip file)?
ABR’s, from a certain version of PS on, can’t be read by Krita and must be converted, so Krita can read them.
AND, and I’m not sure if you are aware of this, KRITA CAN ONLY SEE AND USE THE BRUSH-TIPS THEY CONTAIN!
So, in case you searched for the brush-tips from your ABR among the brush-presets of Krita, then you’ll never find them there. Adobe Brush Resource-Files (ABR’s) are found as brush-tips in the brush-editor of Krita, you can call the brush-editor via a press of F5, and have to attach them to an existing brush-preset, or you create a complete new brush-preset from scratch using your ABR-Brush-Tips.
So if you are aware of this and can’t find your brush-tips in the brush-editor, then the file has to be converted:
To convert your ABR-File, you’ll need a software called abrMate. This is a Windows app, but it can be used on Linux with help of a software that is named WINE. On macOS, the helper-software that should do the trick is called Winebottler and has similar capabilities.
On Linux you should find WINE in your repo, for macOS I found it via Google, because I don’t know where to search for macOS-Software, but you may ask a friend or a different search-engine if you like.
In my cloud, you find the setup-version (abrMate 1.1 - setup.exe) as well as the portable version. Which one you prefer is up to you.
The portable version is found there in a folder that contains all to use it by running the file “abrMate.exe” inside it, you just have to download the folder, to do so.
Furthermore, you find the portable version in a ZIP-Archive (abrMate 1.1 - portable.zip) and a 7Z-Archive (abrMate 1.1 - portable.7z), which of these three you prefer is again up to you.
Also, you can find a copy of the former homepage of abrMate in PNG, HTML & PDF-Format.
Download from Archive.org - The Internet Archive
If you can’t get your ABR working, then I offer to convert it for you. You would not be the first one using this offer.
Upload it to a file hosting service, e.g., Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc., send me the link via PM, and I’ll send you the link to the converted file via a similar service.
In most cases, I was able to convert these files, but there are three known conditions that usually disallow a conversion:
The ABR is copy-protected, it is damaged, or it contains so-called artistic brushes. At least, damaged files sometimes offer a few of the contained brush-tips, but there is no guarantee.
