Altered brush preset doesn't work

New to Krita (I have version 4.4,7 installed on windows) so I might have missed something, but I’ve read the manual on saving presets, and also watched tutorials on how to do it.

I wanted to set a custom brush that was pressure sensitive to affect the size. I have tried saving as a new brush preset and overwriting the original and tested this on a few brushes. However, it only works as intended on the scratchpad that is used for the thumbnail but not when I am actually trying to draw with it. It’s as if it only saved the thumbnail but not the preset itself.

Have I just missed a step, is Krita not working, or is there another reason for this?

Did you give the altered brush a new name? Are you actually using that brush or the original one?

weird that over-writing didn’t work. Did you restart Krita after making the changes?

Yes, I just named it ‘custom1’ and restarted after saving the preset.
It seems like it’s saved the changes but won’t apply it when using the brush, unless I bring up the preset settings window of the brush ‘custom1’, and it will allow me to make one stroke matching the settings.
But obviously this makes the window disappear when I lift my pen off my tablet, and the second stroke will be like the original preset.

What you’re trying to do should work.
Please try the following steps:

  1. Choose the Basic-2 Opacity brush preset.
  2. Open the brush editor window and add Size to the parameter list, as a variation with presuure then test that on the scratchpad area.
  3. Take a screenshot of what you have.
  4. Click off the editor window to close it and test the brush on the canvas.
  5. Open the editor window again and make sure it works on the scratchpad.
  6. Do Save New Brush Preset and call it “Test-Add-Pressure” then Save.

After all that, do you have the Test-Add-Pressure brush preset in the brush presets docker and does it work as before?
If so, is it still there after a restart?

I followed through the steps, it does show up in the docker, but I can’t use the Test-Add-Pressure brush on the canvas, even after restarting Krita.
As you can see in the photo, the brush has altered but not in the way it is on the scratchpad. It’s like the correct brush is underneath but it’s covered in blobs.
The lines with the blobs spaced apart seemed to be triggered by me moving my pen faster, but I didn’t touch the speed settings.

Are you sure the default pressure-sensitive brushes work for you? Like Basic Size? If not, then you don’t have a problem with creating brushes but with your tablet. Switch Krita to Windows Ink in settings, then restart your PC.

@tiar It didn’t occur to me to ask if pressure sensitive brushes worked normally on the canvas.
I must add that question to my internal checklist of questions to be asked.

Why don’t the blobs show on the scratchpad?

Tbh, I’m not sure, but I’ve seen it happened before… something about input handling. Like there are those issues when the pen pressure stops working and the user needs to focus some other window and then Krita, or when the pan tool is used constantly, etc.
