Not sure if this is really a version 5 issue, but importing audio worked perfectly fine in version 4. Whenever I try to import any kind of audio I just get: “cannot open audio:‘file’ error:” Luckily I don’t make many animations but it gets annoying when I want to and cant since I can’t import audio. I’ve tried every file I have but all of them bring up the error. It’s been like this for a few months. I’m using .mp3 files. Is there any way to fix this?
I’ve been getting this same error. I found that when I selected an .mp3 that had no properties – ex. no author, album number, etc – the audio would play properly with no error messages. I downloaded most of my test audios at the same time, from the same website (that has inconsistent naming tendencies), so I can’t figure out any other correlation between the audio working and not working.
Hello @Unique_Hybrid and @thedailypaper. Welcome to the forum ![]()
@Unique_Hybrid Can you download your remembered 4.x version of krita from here:
KDE - Experience Freedom!
Go into the version folder and get the portable .zip package for Windows, Extract it and run krita from inside it. Then you can check if that 4.x version works for you.
(If you’re using Linux or Mac, you’ll know what to do for them.)
@thedailypaper Which version of krita and which operating system are you using?
How long have you had this problem?
Have you always had this problem or has it started recently with a krita version change?
Can you also try a 4.x version of krita, as noted above?
Have you tried using Audacity (or similar application) to re-Export the .mp3 file with properties removed? That would be useful to check your theory.
@Unique_Hybrid could try the same experiment if possible.
Have either of you tried using .wav files? Can you do that to see if they work ok?
hello, sorry for the late response! i am using krita 5.1.5, which i had just downloaded to a new Windows device the day I made my reply. I made a new animation file and immediately encountered the problem when I went to add audio. On my old Windows computer, I had other problems with audio, though that was mostly in Krita 4 versions. I can’t remember if I had this specific problem on that device.
I did redownload the .mp3 file without properties, and it worked perfectly!
I also tried using a .wav file, which did work alright for me.
Thank you for trying that. Using Audacity, I’ve created an .mp3 file with and without metadata in it and they both work ok (on Linux).
For the .mp3 files that gave you an error, let’s say for two of them, can you make your copies of those files available using a link to a file download service/website.
Depending on what those files are, it may be better to send me a DM (Direct Message) to give me the links privately, solely for the purpose of technical investigation and analysis.

Hey! I’ve tried multiple different types of audio forms and even re-exported them as you said. It still doesn’t work on V5.x. I tried to do it on my Mac, as I have both Windows and Mac, but the animation timeline just ends up crashing my MacBook (it’s pretty old, I’m not surprised). I could try .wav files again as my experiment was a month or two ago, but if not I’ll try jumping onto the 4.x version of Krita. Thanks!
I found that for some reason WAV files only worked on my Krita for a while so you could try changing your MP3 files to WAV format. I vaguely recall even finding a Reddit post that said Krita only accepted WAV files but that definitely isn’t true since recently I forgot to convert one of my files to a WAV and realized it still worked even as an MP3…
Another thing that has happened is that I noticed if you moved the file location of an audio after already importing it into a project, then every time you open the project it will say it can’t locate the audio. So make sure you have your audio in the file you want it in before putting it in an animation!
If neither of these is your problem, then hopefully someone else has a solution!
