Blend the line art

Hi all,
Suppose you have your line art to Layer1, your shadows at L2, at L3 you have your color, and at L4 your highlights.
Is it possible to blend your line art from L1 to i.e. the shadows layer (L2) or to L3, without merging the layers? I have seen tutorials of pro artists doing that on some other software. The purpose of doing this is to use your line art for your benefit to create some edge shadows. After all you have to get rid of your line art at some point.

Thank you in advance

Can you elaborate what you mean with the word blend?

I mean blend the line art with my colors so to “erase” it but at the same time use it for my benefit, creating some edge shadows. I can’t explain it further. I have to send you the YT link of the video from the artist but because he uses a different software, I don’t know if I can post it here.

If you place your lineart in overlay mode, it’ll get a lot less apparent in the general context. I usually do this and then put it at 40% opacity when i’m ready to paint over the lines. You’ll still have to ajust a bit, but the lines won’t be as visually strong as they were in black.

If you put your smudge brush in “Overlay Mode” by opening the brush editor and clicking the “overlay mode” column, you’re able to to use the smudge brush on a new empty layer and it will use all the layers to smudge.
