Blender Layer V2

Blender Layer V2 is a plugin for Krita and Blender that connects Blender’s 3D viewport directly to a drawing layer inside Krita in real time.

Specially designed for 2D artists, illustrators, and concept artists who want to use 3D models and poses as a foundation and reference for painting in Krita.

:sparkles: What’s New in V2 (Compatibility with Blender 5.2.0 LTS & Krita 5.3+)

  • Full support for Blender 5.2.0 LTS and Blender 4.x: Updated for Blender’s new graphics architecture and viewport APIs.
  • Fixed transparency / blank canvas bug: Resolved the matrix flattening issue in the Alpha channel (ravel(order='F')) that caused 3D models to become invisible inside Krita.
  • Support for Pose Library and Action Previews: Fixed the integer overflow error when loading pose asset previews from the library.
  • Shared Memory Optimization: Smooth pixel transfer with exact buffer slicing.
  • Automatic Detection on Windows: Smart detection of Blender executables (LTS, standard, and Steam versions).
  • 1-Click Installer: Includes install.bat (Windows) and install.py (Cross-platform) scripts.

:rocket: Quick Installation

Option A (Recommended): Use the automatic installer

  1. Download or clone this repository.
  2. On Windows: Double-click install.bat.
On macOS / Linux: Run python install.py in the terminal.
  3. Open Krita and go to:
Settings ➔ Configure Krita... ➔ Python Plugin Manager.
  4. Enable the checkbox: [X] Blender Layer.
  5. Restart Krita and open the docker from:
Settings ➔ Dockers ➔ Blender Layer.

Option B: Manual Installation

  1. Copy the blender_layer.desktop file and the blender_layer folder into your user’s pykrita directory:
    • Windows: %APPDATA%\krita\pykrita\
    • Linux: ~/.local/share/krita/pykrita/
    • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/krita/pykrita/
  2. Enable the plugin in Krita’s settings and restart.

:video_game: How to Use

  1. Open a canvas in Krita.
  2. In the Blender Layer side docker, click “Start Blender”.
  3. Blender will open and connect automatically. A layer named Blender Layer will be created on your canvas showing the live 3D preview.
  4. You can also drag and drop any .blend file directly into Krita to open and connect it automatically.

Navigation Controls

  • Rotate 3D View: Drag the sphere widget in the docker, or hold Alt + Middle Mouse Button on the canvas.
  • Pan: Hold Shift while dragging the sphere widget, or use Alt + Ctrl + Middle Mouse Button.
  • Zoom / Focal Length: Use the focal length slider, or use Alt + Shift + Middle Mouse Button.

Additional Features

  • Shading Modes: Switch between Wireframe, Solid, Material Preview, and Rendered.
  • Perspective Guides (Drawing Assistants): Click “Create Assistant Set” to generate automatic perspective guide lines that match the 3D camera angle.
  • Pose Library: Select mannequins (like Body-chan / Body-kun) and double-click to apply poses from the asset library.
  • Final Render & Animation: Render directly onto the Krita layer or import frame sequences as a 2D animation.

Want to say thank you for updating this plug-in especially for Blender 5.2. Will you be able to do compatibility with Krita 6?

For now, I’ll see if it’s possible: I understood that since they’re more or less similar, they should be compatible. It’s worth testing, though; I’ll investigate.

For now, try it; if not, there might be an update soon.

I tried out testing. 5.3.3 seems to be working just fine. However, 6.0.3 doesn’t seem to respond the same way when dragging and dropping the Blender file onto Krita. Just gives insert layer option and gives an error that Krita does not support this file format.

But I’m not saying this out of urgency or any rush as I know it will still take time before Krita 6 software becomes stable for professional use. But it would be nice this plug-in to be ready for Krita 6. Again, thank you for the update.

Just wanted to say thank you for getting this working again! Was such a great add-on and it was so sad to see it no longer being updated.

The instructions for this add-on are insufficient. I don’t know how to fix it when the display looks like this. Please explain

you’re a life saver homie
