Hi, have you heard about it?
It’s kinda interesting how open-source software is landing on so “closed” area. Isn’t it good track for Krita to appear on iPad one day?
I’d love to use it with Apple Pencil Pro. ![]()
What is your opinion?

Old news, and the topics these reside in:
Edit: @raghukamath / @sooz / @Takiro: Should this topic be merged with one of the others? It’s at least a little different titlewise …

not an ios user, but, for such a restrictive company, i hope this brings good news and use for new users
While the other topics do contain the same news they are mainly about Krita on iOS not Blender specifically although they became off topic because of the news. There is some overlap but they are about different things.
But you are right, if this topic would go further into the direction of “does this mean krita on iPad soon”?, they will get merged. If this keeps being about Blender, it can stay.
That was the ulterior motive I had in mind, it’s not the same, it’s just similar. Therefor my question.
Thank you!

I am neither programmer nor developer so I wonder how they (Blender-team) make this possible to have Blener on iPad? ![]()
As far as I know Blender uses a lot of free resources like Python-stuff, etc. but Apple’s politics is/was strict for open-source programs.
Can anyone explain me their “workaround” ? ![]()
This is a question for the Blender forum.

The issue is not so much the Open Source-ness (or that it’s free). What keeps a lot of Open Source projects away from Apple and iOS is the additional cost. You have to pay Apple to develop apple software, basically. And you have to confirm that every contributor agrees with Apple’s terms which is hard if not impossible for most Open Source projects with more than just a few contributors.
My guess is that Blender as a company can do this because contributors already sign off their rights by contributing. Plug-ins are not strictly part of the software so that also is not an issue. A lot of the Blender code is first party. To the nature of the project it has not so many dependencies. They have their own UI framework and did originally develop a lot of their stuff themselves so less worrying about third party licenses. Some stuff is even MIT licensed which is basically a do whatever you want licene. Krita’s GPL and LGPL are much more restrictive in comparison (but still free). We should also not forget that blender has a huge budget compared to, for example, Krita and therefore can get things moving more easily. But these are just guesses. I’m not deep into the blender community (only use it occasionally). Additionally the App-Store also makes a difference between paid and unpaid Open Source Software and it is much easier when you publish the software for free on it.
I also want to add that despite all the licensing and typical Apple issues it is an amazing technical feat to bring such a complex software to a device that is pretty underpowered compared to what 3D artists normally need and to make it usable on a touch device. I can’t even imagine using Blender without having access to all the keyboard shortcuts one typically uses and also all the dockers and panels you normally have open.
Thx a lot @Takiro for your opinion! It’s interesting and I guess you have right in some things here.
Apple’s iPad can use bluetooth keyboard so I guess some shortcuts would be possible as well. ![]()
@Michelist Fortunately this is off-topic subforum so this subject can be covered here as such.

So you’re not looking for answers at all, instead you’ve just created a topic so that we can discuss hot air and get ourselves all worked up…
Great! ![]()

Man, I don’t understand you. You’ve misinterpreted it. ![]()
It looks like you’re nitpicking about something unknown.
If you’re not interested in the topic, just skip it—the forum has many other threads.
As a user of Krita, Blender, and iPad, I’m curious about other people’s opinions on this event—and I have the right to be here.
If you’re a “good helper,” prove it and don’t make a mountain out of a molehill. ![]()
The good helper award is awarded automatically by the forum to those who helped solve a certain number of support request topics. There’s nothing to prove here.
Please keep personal fights out of this. Both of you.
