Bluetooth keyboard unable to input Krita keyboard commands on Android

Type of device* : Android tablet
Brand and version of the device: Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE
System** : Android (Krita v5.1.5)

Description of the issue (you can include screenshots):

Hello, recently I’ve been having trouble inputting Krita shortcut commands using a bluetooth keyboard (something like a Logitech bluetooth keyboard, connected via bluetooth).

For example, if I press “m” on the keyboard, my tablet device doesn’t register the Krita shortcut command to flip the canvas, but instead thinks that I typed the letter “m” and shows it in the little text section that Samsung has when you connect an external keyboard. It also happens with similar shortcuts, so instead of switching to the brush I’m currently using by pressing “b”, I actually type “b”, or pressing “e” types “e” rather than switching to eraser mode.

The shortcut commands used to work beautifully with a bluetooth keyboard, though the last time I used a bluetooth keyboard with Krita in conjunction might have been around last October (i.e. October 2023). I’m not really sure why it’s suddenly not working anymore, but I recently did get a new tablet and tried to port all my data from the old one, so it might have been because of that? Reinstalling Krita didn’t help either…

Does anyone else have this issue on Android, or is it something on my end?

Any help will be appreciated!

Oh yes, that would be it.

That’s the Samsung’s Android mix doing ‘helpful’ things for you.
Can you supress that anywhere in the Samsung Android system settings?

That was when you were using an Android device that didn’t intercept external keyboard presses but passed them on to the application you were using.

If you use a third party text editor application (not as supplied already installed by Samsung), do external keyboard presses register properly in the application?

Krita will do what it’s told to do and it’s not responding to ‘m’, ‘b’, ‘e’, etc because it’s not being told that you’ve pressed them.

I’ve gone into device settings and turned off the option to show the toolbar when using a physical keyboard, and it seemed to have stopped the system from preventing the inputs to go through to Krita for the time being. My guess is that Samsung’s data transfer process had some issues, and I just happened to accidentally repeatedly activate the system toolbar in Krita afterwards?

If the issue still persists, I might try using a third party text editor, though I hope the fix is permanent.

Thank you so much for the help!

Hii
I was having the same problem last week and found out the same thing (that I should turn off the keyboard toolbar samsung shows at the bottom of the screen) and it worked too.

It helped with a lot of commands and I thought all was good, but that was not true, unfortunatelly. I am using the book cover keyboard that comes with the tablet (S9). My problem now is that I was trying to use the [ and ] commands to change the brush size. But only the [ works, and it increases the size when it should decrease. I thought it was weird and went to check the shortcuts. The defaults are all correct, so I decided to add an “alternative” way, which would be the same [ and ]. When I clicked the [ command it showed a ] on the box. And when I clicked ] it showed a \ in the box. So, for some reason, my keyboard is acting like I am pressing the wrong key… It does not happen on other apps, only krita.

Anyone facing something similar? Sorry for jumping on your board but I didn’t want to create a new one since I think it’s an extension of the same problem. Thank you!

Sorry to hear about your issues! I’m not the best with technology, but perhaps you could try using a third party text editor like @AhabGreybeard suggested? I’m not too sure how it might be set up though…

I do find it a little strange how your keys are registering as the next one over from the one you pressed. I wonder what could be causing that issue? Do you perhaps have other keyboards you can test in Krita with to see if something similar happens?
