Breakout topic for discussing the monthly art challenge format and rules

Hey @sooz , ya. I found it odd that I could not find a link too.

By any chance, are you a member of discourse.org? I’m not. Maybe private message the poster, merefield, and ask where this mythological plugin can be found? They seem active in the forum.

Or maybe post and ask about where to grab it?

I could sign up if you’re not on discourse, but since I don’t know any of the follow-up questions around the https://krita-artists.org/ implementation needs, seems silly for me to be a middleman there.

Some of the Discourse plugins are paid and therefore may not be available for direct download. The next question, if it is a type of paywall, is: Is it a one-time fee or a recurring fee? And last but not least, how much does it cost?

Michelist

I left a message on that thread for Merefield. Let’s see what we can find.

Seems like ranked choice is in the default discourse. Only it had problem with pie chart results. But I think we can manage it without the pie chart since we do not use it. We need to choose the poll type to ranked choice.

Ranked choice poll test
  • Option 1
  • Option 2
  • Option 3
  • Option 4
  • Option 5

I am creating a break-out topic to move the discussion about the changed to monthly art challenge from the other thread.

Please add more discussion here and keep the other thread limited to the current challenge WIP etc

Very cool @raghukamath ! Thanks so much for looking into this!

I have 2 questions about the poll above, hopefully you can help us out.

1 - Right now, after I vote I only see the top option’s results reported as a majority winner. Maybe this because it has won a majority and therefore would be considered an election winner in Round 1.

Is it possible to show all the vote totals for each option, rather than just the option that received the highest total or a majority? Showing the votes received for each option would be similar to how we’ve seen the voting results in the past, enabling someone receiving fewer points to still see where their pieces ranked.

2 - How are the votes for each option, in our case the art piece submitted, counted when tallying votes to decide on a ‘winner’? For example, are the votes weighted, straight, or maybe something else?

  • Weighted, something like: Option 1’s total poll value = (# of 1 Highest Priority votes * 5 points) + (# of 2 votes * 4 points) + (# of 3 votes * 3 points) + (# of 4 votes * 2 points*) +* (# of 5 Lowest Priority votes * 1 point) + (# of Abstain * 0 points)
… or some such scale for the number of vote positions we wish to consider

  • Straight count: All the votes for each option (choices 1 through 5) all just summed to reach a total number of points
… This would make sense in an election, but it is less useful in our use case

  • Are ‘Abstain’ votes counted or used in the tally in any way?

IMHO: If it’s possible…

  • I’d love to see us use a weighted voting system where each voter gets to vote for their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place options for the month.

  • The system assigns each option’s 1st place votes with 5 points, 2nd place votes with 4 points and 3rd place (honorable mention) votes with 1 point.

  • The month’s ‘winner’ would be the option with the highest total summed point tally.

  • Using this scale would allow us 3 votes each so we could basically vote for two ‘winners’ and an honorable mention each month.

  • I believe this is what @Mythmaker was suggesting in his when he said “We can choose our 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices with varying points for each.”

If you click on the Vote link (I know it it poorly designed and less obvious) you can see votes of each voter.

I also found this option today😊. I will read and research more about this. but from what I see I think it counts straight

That is the current system it asks for your first second and third priority

Um, oops. Duh. :see_no_evil_monkey:

Thanks for digging in, and looking forward to what you find on the rest!

Yes. Although I was thinking of a more even allocation such as 1st = 3, 2nd = 2, 3rd = 1

I think keeping the points spread low makes sense in terms of each voter’s choices having a limited weight in the final tally.

I’m still worried this might be too complicated, but I guess we won’t really know without testing it in a real vote. If it works, it could also be useful for the monthly feature vote (I’m pretty sure I’ve suggested it for that in the past).

Thank you to everyone who helped with these changes.

Here is our new ranked poll: Monthly Art Challenge – VOTING OPEN – January 2026 – Vintage Travel Poster - #43 by sooz

Thanks everyone for your hard work in bringing the new voting style to January’s Monthly Challenge!

@sooz : Now that we have January’s voting results, how was this month’s voting process on your end?

I didn’t see how many votes my “Auntie Artica’s Polar Plunge” received, as it’s not listed at all in the results. Does this mean it got no votes?

Even though the way the results are displayed is different from what we were shown above in this topic, I agree with keeping the voting anonymous.

Some thoughts, ‘cause I care:
Seeing how the votes were spread out, I’m worried about this new voting process. Even though I can’t see the individual votes, it feels like folks are using their three votes on their own submissions first and doing so up to three times. And of course, there are no rules against that (yet). In hindsight, this makes sense. Nash’s Game Theory would suggest people are voting in their own self-interest and it predicts that this will happen eventually.

However, I don’t think this format of voting is what’s best for the contest in the long term. To me, this just dosen’t feel right for our little contest. If posters choose to use multiple votes on themselves, it means other deserving posts are not receiving those votes. If Elixiah voted for herself (and she should have, it’s the best image of the month) that means the winning post only received votes from 4 other people.

Here’s what I can see from my point of view…
I cast my three votes for @Elixiah , then @edgarej(MARS with text) , and then my SF poster. But let’s suppose I chose to vote exclusively for my 3 images instead, as Nash would suggest I’ll do because it is in my best interest to do so. (And honestly, I’m proud of my work on all three of them.) Then the very nice image by @MossGreenEddie would have tied for first place with Elixiah (4 votes) and Mars Express would have moved down to be tied with a bunch of other submissions further down the list (2 votes).

And… it was actually Elixiah’s own vote that granted her the win. Again, TITAN was my top choice so I feel the win is well deserved.

An Alternative Solution:
As a possible way to make the voting more equitable and less self-motivated, I’d like to reiterate my suggestion of grouping the submissions by artist and keep the 3 ranking votes. Then only one of those votes could go to your own posting(s) if you feel they are worthy, and the other two votes would be spread across other artists.

Or, limit the number of votes that can be cast for your own works. I have no idea if the software can do that though…

And maybe the mods can brighten my day. If they can see the voting details and let me know that I’m being too cynical because the votes were mostly cast for other people, that’d be a relief. :person_shrugging:

On a different note
I’d like to mention a bit about how the results are displayed. Is it possible to make the results clearer? I mean, it’s difficult to read how many votes each piece received. For example, did my Cinnamon Bay painting receive 1 vote, or no votes? Even more so, from the way it displays on my screen, it is difficult to see how many votes an image in the middle of a vote count received, like @dgarej’s “no MARS text” post. I almost need to scroll to the bottom to see where the point break line is.

The winner at the bottom of the listing is a fun little reveal!

Hi @steve.improvthis

I’m happy that we were able to vote for the best image but I’m disappointed in the way the results are displayed. I thought artists would receive more feedback than the original poll type (because this month each image was voted on individually) but that’s not what happened.

Apparently instant run-off voting (which is what the ranked_choice poll delivers) only displays the winner.

As a proposal, what would we all think of keeping the images separated as we did in the January poll (i.e. not clubbed together by artist) but reverting to the regular poll where the percentage of votes is displayed?

This would give artists more feedback as those submitting multiple images will know which one(s) received votes.

Either way, the manual part of compiling the poll isn’t any more work.

But…. I never vote for my own entry. Never have. :person_shrugging:

Well this was certainly unexpected! I was so sure that @MossGreenEddie was going to win this one, and was my first choice.

Thank you all for liking my Titan poster, in which I did learn quite a bit about Krita’s texting features doing this one.

I would like to extend the honor of selecting next month’s topic/learning opportunity to @MossGreenEddie if he is willing.

Otherwise, I’ll just have to torture y’all with a landscape topic for next month.

No - It was my no.2 so I don’t know what happened there.

I really don’t know how to read the overall results - it’s very confusing. I wasn’t expecting the run-off method to fit our means though - I was hoping it might be flexible so it could be adapted to a single round tally (with the tiered points).

No - I didn’t think you did. I’ve never done that either.

I’m sorry @Elixiah I certainly didn’t mean to be accusing or jerky. I hope what I typed wasn’t taken incorrectly. If you had voted for TITAN was what I meant to say. I edited this so many times before I posted it and still I messed up on that. :frowning:

Thanks for the vote.
And maybe @sooz can sleuth out what happened?

@steve.improvthis
No worries!. Understanding the results was confusing to me as well.

I don’t have access to any of the voting data. Perhaps @raghukamath has heard of a way to get it.

Edgarej has two images very similar, his votes split in half just because of that depending on the votes, it’s the same with coretin, you can’t see the votes how many vote for the winner and how many vote for the rest, i don’t like that, and what is that of rounds, if it was a last minute vote, again is like cheating, just my opinion, i really don’t know why you needed to vote for 3 places, you just need the winner
