The Krita Manual isn’t really helpful when it comes to brush creation. Initially I was confused about how to import photoshop brushes and see them in the brush docker.
I created the tag “explosions” in the Brush Editor. I later found out from an user that this tag is only for the Editor, not the Brush Docker. When I enter “expl”, short for the explosions tag, in both the ediitor and the docker. there are two different results. And I do understand that the brush presets are different from the brush tips, but they are separate tag systems. It took me a very long time to even find the brushes I created and tagged, in the resouce manager.
What I am requesting is perhaps some kind of merging with the Brush Tips and the Brush Presets. It can’t possibly be that complicated to implement. But even if it is, that’s okay. Perhaps add better documentation about how the brush editor and brush presets work, especially when importing PS brushes and the usage of brush tips.
Also, it seems like sometimes when I import PS brushes and activate them, they don’t show up in the brush docker. I forgot how to get them to show up in the docker. Or, I do know how by adding tags, but it seems rather tedious to add the tag one by one to +20 brushes in a bundle. This whole process should be streamlined by allowing us to tag the whole bundle.
You are having confusion because you are equating brush tips and brush presets even if you say you know they are different. When you import Photoshop brushes you are really importing the brush tip and not the brush presets. You have to recreate them and only then they will be available in the brush presets docker. Brush tip and brush preset are different just as brush preset and pattern or any other resourse is different. Why would the tag for one be shown in the other’s docker.
Brush tip is one distinct resource and brush presets are different resource. Brush preset sure use brush tips or patterns or other resource but they are not same. Each resource can be tagged. Tag of one resrouse is not shown in other docker to avoid confusion
I think for brush creation, we would need an own manual, but it would probably have double the size of the “normal” manual, but we got the videos by @RamonM.
Presets and brush-tips (or brushes) can hold the same tags, there is no issue. Try it and give a preset in the presets-docker the tag “explosions”. I used this to give resources of a bundle a consistent tag that tells “I’m a resource of bundle XYZ”, brush-tips, presets, patterns, gradients does not matter, they all can share identical tags.
And about ABR’s and the manual, the biggest issue is that most people don’t read it really:
Why is it impossible for the Krita devs to give us a toggle option to allow Brush Tips to display in the presets docker? It’s a little weird.
@Michelist the link you provided doesn’t specifically mention the difference between brush tips and brush presets, which is where my confusion came from in the past. Because bundles work differently than ABR files. Anyway- am I to assume that ABR files that are imported as bundles will not show up in the docker at all, that I still have to individually make each brush a preset so they show up in the docker? If so, then I think I finally understand.
From ABR’s only the brush-tips can be imported, see the picture I added, there are more occurrences in the manual that say that from ABR’s only the brush-tips can be imported, but I’m tired have headaches and fever because I’m C-positiv, so I didn’t do a deeper search to present you these passages. The best is one passage where the users switch out their mind after reading ABR’s can be imported, but if they would read the passage to its end they would know that only the brush-tips are imported.
If you want to recreate a photoshop-brush, you need the ABR and have to rebuild any of its settings, right ANY, by hand, one after the other, in most cases this is a chore, but if you want a brush like brush-XYZ fro PS you have to recreate it beginning with the ONLY THING KRITA CAN READ FROM AN ABR, THE BRUSH-TIP.
Felt, there are hundreds of topics about this topic in the forum, search for ABR import, or photoshop brush import, something like this be creative with your search words.
It is the brush preset docker so why would other resource be shown in it. Brush tips are just image files what will it do in the brush preset docker? I mean let’s take that they show brush tip in the brush preset docker you click on on of the brush tip now what? Brush tips are not brush presets so you won’t be able to use them as brush preset and paint.
One can also ask the question why can’t the patterns be shown in brush preset docker.
Again your issue is that you are equating brush tips which are just image files or sequence of image files with a proper brush preset. Does Photoshop show pattern or brush tip in the brush stack no.
@raghukamath
Alright. I assumed that other resources could be shown in the brush preset docker because the bundles are added through the resource library. So the word ‘resources’ fooled me I guess. Can the imported ABR tips be displayed in its own docker?
It is called brush preset docker for a reason. Other resrouses have their own docker or window. Like there is gradient chooser. Pattern docker etc etc. Layer styles can also be a resource do you want them to show up in the area where brush presets are shown. At that point it is a generic docker showing all resrouces. If you want that you can check manage resource option in the settings menu
I said docker or window. I should have added the word dialog and section and tab too.
Brush tips are shown inside the brush editor under predefined tips . The one which you are using in your screenshots is that tab for selecting brush tips. You are tagging brush tips. Inside the brush editor.
Let me try to explain. A brush preset is generally made of different things and different settings. A basic brush is an image repeated countless times over the canvas you can see this happening if you increase the spacing. This is explained in the basic concepts page of the manual, may be the volunteers need to improve the manual in this regard even more . This image is called the brush tip.. A brush tip is used as a component or raw material to create a brush preset. The brush preset can use other resrouses as well like it can use pattern. So if you go to the pattern section in the brush editor you can choose patterns similar to how you are selecting brush tips in the predefined tips tab.
Each resource can be its own thing or it can be used in conjunction with other resource to build a new type of resource. Resource is not just brush preset. It can be anything. Hence there is a separate manage resources dialog.
