i’ve been thinking about my art a lot lately and i’ve come to the realization that i’ve been using all kinds of brushes as crutches.
because im lacking in fundamentals, im thinking of doing a challenge of only using a round hard brush, a round opacity brush, and an airbrush for all my art for a bit.
dont know when cause im pretty busy these days, but i really wanna try it.
for anyone that has went through something like this, what was your experience?
I agree that this kind of limitation can be a useful exercise in improving your art fundamentals. For For example, the Drawabox course limits the artist to a 0.5mm ink fineliner on paper for the same reason (as explained in the Required Tools section of lesson 0). That is to say, when drawing for fun or profit, use whatever tools give you the best experience. But when working on your line fundamentals (such as stability and confidence), you may see marked improvement if you practice using tools that force you to rely on those skills (such as an ink fineliner, which prevents you from varying line weight or drawing in light strokes; Your pen is either on the page or it isn’t!)
The only caution I would give about a challenge like this: Even though it might seem counterproductive, I recommend only making some of your art with these limitations. To again reference Drawabox, the 50% rule suggests at most half of your time spent creating art should be training. 50% or more should be play, because art should be allowed to be something you love!
Either way, you’re definitely thinking in the right direction here as far as improving your fundamentals. I hope to how things go!
