When using Krita, my layers keep disappearing. I have used and been using Krita for a long time and this has never happened, this first started happening when I downloaded Krita on Windows, never has any issues with it on macOS. When I click on a given layer it disappears giving me a transparent background, when I click on another layer it shows only that layer even when the other layers are visible. Every time this happens I find a way to work around this problem but today it really got on my nerves. I was drawing and was using the vector tool to write some details about my work instead of writing it by hand using my wonking handwriting. When I went to select one of my other layers it deleted my layer completely, I click on my other layers not knowing what was happening and deleted most of layers I spent hours drawing. I tried to undo but the undo button wasn’t working either. I am not sure if this is a bug or just a mistake of mine as I don’t often use the vector tool, but it seems unlikely for the vector tool to delete layer and then not undo. I am on Windows, use the newest version of Krita and draw using a Wacom cintiq 16 in case that gives any info.
Hi @magikmaiden - Welcome to the forum.
Disappearing layers is not normal. By any chance are you hitting the delete key? That will clear an entire layer (raster layer, not vector layer).
My wild guess would be the layer isolate function. Alt+left-click the layer name or right-click and choose ‘Isolate active layer’.
I wasnt hitting the delete key, I was just clicking through my layers. Krita has been malfunctioning for me a lot recently, could the file have downloaded wrong?
That’s unlikely, I don’t usually use my keyboard for shortcuts and rather have shortcuts on the interface for easier use.
First thing you should check if the isolate layer/group feature is active, maybe it was clicked on by accident which can easily happen unnoticed because of the UI being kinda bad in that case. Right click (or left click when you use a left handed mouse) on a layer in the layers docker to open the context menu.
It’s unfortunately really hard to see if it’s checked
See the upper one is active, there is a slight border around it, the lower one is inactive.

Another thing that could be the cause is that the ALT key somehow got stuck or at least gets send to Krita as pressed. This can maybe checked for by using a selection tool like the rectangular selection. If the ALT key is stuck the selection will move around instead of getting created properly. Also pressing keys on the keyboard like F, E, I, L, S, T, N, W or H would open menus from the menu bar when ALT key signal is somehow present (instead of their normal shortcuts). This way you could at least check if something is off with the keys or the keyboard.
If the content get actually deleted I suspect that Krita gets the wrong signal (DEL instead of ALT). Do you use your graphics-tablet/stylus or a mouse when you do the click?
+1 with Takiro.
I had just a quick test, and a stuck ALT key (broken key, always pressed) could explain a lot of symptoms you describe. The key can be on the Keyboard or on the tablet shortcuts, btw.
