Call for artwork for banners and icons

Hi everyone. For the Krita 5.3 release, we (Krita’s developers) are looking for artistic contributions for some banners and icons to use in news posts, in announcements, to decorate parts of the application, to advertise donations or similar purposes. Specifically the following formats:

Icons. The minimum size is 400x400 pixels , but they may be larger (in the same aspect ratio.) They should have a transparent background . An example for something like this can be seen on the donations page on krita.org, with the Kiki with a piggy bank icon.

Banners. The minimum size is 2000x400 pixels , but they may be larger (in the same aspect ratio.) You can also make them wider, but it should be possible to crop them to this ratio without losing anything important. Ideally, they should have some room for text, like we might put “update to Krita 5.3” or “support Krita with a donation” or “get Krita on Steam”.

If you have other pictures at hand that you think may be useful, you can offer those up too of course, but we may not be able to use them if we can’t make them fit.

As for what should be in the pictures, that is mostly up to you. Of course having Kiki in them is nice, but people, other creatures, landscapes or the abstract are all fine too. However, some things must be avoided:

  • No AI use whatsoever. We don’t care if you organically sourced it, we just really, really, really don’t wanna deal with it.

  • Do not include anything from popular media , like fanart of a cartoon, comic or video game. These have copyright issues.

  • Avoid species made by someone else , such as synths. Even if the creator is generally fine with their use, they still cause copyright issues. Kiki can of course be used freely.

  • Don’t use characters that you or others use for other purposes. This is mostly to avoid grief in the future if you, for example, end up disliking the character.

  • Don’t write text directly on the pictures , not everyone speaks English! You can leave space or speech bubbles for text to be inserted though. Signing your work is fine too of course.

The pictures must be licensed under one of the following Creative Commons licenses: CC-BY SA 4.0 (recommended), CC-BY 4.0 or CC-0. Please clearly state under what license you offer your pictures and under what name we should credit you. Any Creative Commons licenses with “ND” or “NC” in them are not usable. We also don’t accept custom or informal licenses, the Krita Foundation doesn’t have the legal resources to deal with that.

You can post the pictures you want to offer in this thread. If you prefer to stay out of the public, you can also send them to me via a direct message (click on my icon and pick “message”.) Of course we can’t guarantee if we use the pictures and to what capacity, but all help is appreciated.

Our goal is to release Krita 5.3 in February 2026, so we hope to see submissions before end of January. Submissions coming in later are still welcome, but are increasingly unlikely to make it.

Thanks!

Until when do you need those images?

We plan to release Krita 5.3 in february, so end January is preferable.

Does it have to be made with the new Krita release and show off what can be done with new features?

No, that’s not necessary. Although if you do use a new feature, it’d be nice to know.

Does this post make a mark that 5.3.0 is close to release? It’s exciting!

Hello ! where do we have to put the CC license ?

It just needs to be clear what license you want to use. Ideally, write something like “Copyright 2025 ariane.uh, licensed under CC-BY-SA 4.0” into the message when submitting your picture. You can replace “ariane.uh” with whichever other name you wish to be credited under, like your real name or some other moniker you use for your art.

Hello, I made two images of Kiki. A portrait image and a chibi image. In the portrait version I tried to make Kiki’s buds look like generators. The chibi version is supposed to portray Kiki in a “job well done” type of pose.

The portrait image has a light collar and dark collar version. I included a correctly mirrored version of the chibi image making sure the Krita logo on her shirt was correctly oriented.

It was challenging for me, but I had a lot of fun making these and I think I got some good practice out of them. I also really like Kiki and her whole budding artist concept.

If you decide to use any of these, then please let me know so I can take a look. Also, I would like to post unshaded versions of the images in case those are preferred. I’m new to the site, so I can only post 4 images at a time. Hopefully I can just make a second post.

Here are the unshaded, flat versions. This makes my post seem really long, so sorry about that.
