Hoping animations can be nominated, I just nominated an animation, not thinking about the consequences if not. So my question is can we nominate animations? Because I have at least one more animation, I want to nominate.

There might be a problem with showing the animation in the Featured Gallery.
@raghukamath would know about that.
If so, the artists could be asked to provide a suitable still image from the animation for the gallery.
That may be a way to go. Perhaps with an overlay stating that it is an animation.

We already had “featured” works from the animation section.
In one of the forum updates about a year ago, almost all the covers lost animation, it was a sad moment.
If the forum does not have the functionality to configure the cover trim, it may be worth contacting the author of the work, if it does not make it difficult to make a “lightweight cover” for the gallery.
We can often find on the web that for vertical videos, instead of cropping, blurry fields are added to fill in the void, perhaps such a solution is easier to automate, but this cannot be done without a forum developer
We have about a dozen animations in the featured gallery.

The Lara Croft animation was nominated and voted in. I’ve added the featured tag but it doesn’t show up on the featured gallery bar it is now displayed on the gallery bar but the head and feet are cut off. It does show up in the regular portion of the featured gallery but it’s not a sharp image.
May I suggest that we limit nominations to the Finished Artwork category? At least until we discover a way around this?
In my request for permission to post the artwork outside of KA, I’ll ask the artist if they want to produce a thumbnail for the topic so the featured image is higher quality.

I think, to display it in the Featured Gallery, there is no other way than to explicitly select a screenshot from the animation (by the author) and paste it into the Featured Gallery after cropping it to the aspect ratio of a thumbnail window of the Featured Gallery, and mark it as animation.
Following the suggestions of @AhabGreybeard “suitable still image” and @Andreich_DMBL “contacting the author … to make a “lightweight cover””, and also to the overlay I suggested, which marks the screenshot as an excerpt from an animation, for example icons like these 
or a small lettering like “animation”, “excerpt from animation” (possibly, and depending on the aspect ratio (letterbox), below the screenshot and horizontally or beside and vertically, like Japanese top-down font).
Images in unusually wide or high formats must be formatted in the same way in order to fit into the preview boxes of the gallery (or is a section of the image chosen for the gallery?), similar to the so-called letterbox in cinema films, whose aspect ratio does not match that of the TV set.
