Hi there, I’m fairly new to using Krita and am having a lot of trouble figuring out how to do the line art portion of my drawings so I was wondering if there was a way I could import files or layers from other drawing apps to use in Krita. I’ve got shaky hands due to some medical conditions which makes doing line art free hand with brushes nearly impossible for me. I’ve tried using the system for drawing lines but its been extremely difficult for me since they don’t place right under the mouse and I can’t edit the shape if needed once I’ve placed them. I’ve been wanting to transfer from Sai to Krita since Krita has more brush options for detailing and coloring but the lack of an easy to use system for making smooth lines is causing me a lot of trouble. I’ve tried to work on and practicing my abilities to draw lines and line art but it always turns out jagged no matter how much shaping or erasing I do. I’m reaching a point where I just kinda want to cry, give up, and go back to what I’m used too. So I guess this is something of a last ditch effort to see if anyone knows if I can move over other files or has any recommendations on how I can do the things I’m struggling with since practices and tutorial videos don’t seem to be doing me any good.
Use vector layers instead of paint(raster) layers, then you can edit the lines afterwards.
Edit: Oh and yes, you can import from other places, just go to Layer->Import/Export and pick import or import layer depending on your needs.
Edit2: Also, just remembered, if you need to work with lines on a paint layer and have shaky hands, an option is to make use of the View->Snap To feature. You can snap to either the grid if you have it on show or snap to pixel which makes it much more predictable.
SAI often uses some vector stuff, and most probably Krita won’t be able to read it, unless it’s in SVG. So, you need to export it as PNG image with a transparent background. (I guess exporting as PSD file will work too, then you won’t need to think what is transparent and what is not).
Then just open the file in Krita, or import using Layer → Import if you already have a document open that you want to add that lineart to.
Hello and welcome to the forum.
Maybe it is a bit off-topic but I think it may help. If you have difficulty drawing smother lines and would like to shape and smother them later, then using Blender with its Grease Pencil could be a good alternative. You can draw your line art and sculpt them as you see fit. If you never saw here is a video showing the capabilities from the Grease Pencil.
Afterword you can save as PNG image and import into Krita.
Cheers
Have you tried the brush smoothing options for the Freehand Brush tool?
They’re in the Tool Options docker for it:
The screenshot shows the Weighted option in use and there is the Stabiliser option which can give extreme smoothing.
Using vectors, you can try the Freehand path tool then edit/adjust the lines with the Edit Shapes tool.
There is also the use of the assistant tool. I very often will use the spline when I need precise curved lines but still need line weight variation. you can also chain multiple splines together. When you select your brush tool you can choose to “snap to assistants” under the tool options. You can choose to snap to a single assistant, or if you have multiple chained together you can uncheck “snap single” and your brush will snap to multiple splines in the chain.
I see the difficulties you’re facing. If you are drawing with a mouse besides that, it would make the task even quite a bit harder I think.
If you have the opportunity I suggest you trying a tablet. I use the Wacom Intuos M and it helps me a lot . Though, at first I really needed to get used to it. The moore my sight and my hand got adapt to it, the better my lines became.
Oh my gosh thank you for this. I just tried it out and it works perfectly for me, exactly what I needed! Thank you so much!
