Can you put a krita file into photoshop?

I’ve heard you can open photoshop in krita but does vice-versa work? wanna try smth with an art project and was wondering whether I could open the direct .kra file on photoshop (i have 2023 version) or should i go for the 100% guaranteed to work way of converting .kra to.jpg or .png and then opening that on PS?

No photoshop will not support kra opening or import. It is also not in Krita’s hand to make it load in photoshop. Adobe needs to support the format from their end.

Even Krita’s PS-File support is very limited because Photoshop has a lot of features that Krita doesn’t (and vice versa) and some things both have in common they still implement differently. Layered TIFF files (basically raw image data) would be my recommendation but from what I heard even that can be difficult with Photoshop (layers getting lost sometimes).

The ORA file format aims to provide a standardized exchange format but is still in development and also not supported by Photoshop.

emmmm… Photoshop doesn’t support the original Krita format
But I can do a conversion for you (I have Photoshop cc2019)

ORA would be really good for the vtuber side of things.

If you save your Krita file as a PSD (not export, but ‘save as’) it will open in Photoshop and show the layers etc and you can continue working on it. I don’t know about what other sub features are compatible or not and therefore may not translate across the programmes. But I know I have definitely saved my Krita file as a PSD and opened it in Photoshop and edited the artwork. As a side note that may or may not be useful, I’ve noticed that Adobe Character Animator also accepts the Krita PSD files so you can create a puppet in Krita and load directly in ChAn and bypass Photoshop altogether. I’ve found this immensely useful.

If you don’t have clipping layers and filter masks it should be fine just save it as psd and open it in photoshop.

 Hello @Sketchy, and welcome to the forum!

Yes, you can export to PSD and in case the document to be exported has functions unsupported by the PSD-Format, it will refuse to export in order to prevent loss of information. If this happens, some users think Krita has an error or even bug, but it is only for security purposes if it refuses to export.

But, if my memory doesn’t fool me, there is at least one improvement in the work to achieve better interchangeability.

Hello! @Michelist Thank you for the info. I’m not sure if I’ve tried to export as a PSD so I’ll bear that in mind if I do and it refuses to export. Now I’ll know why!
When I said in my comment save as PSD file, I meant just ‘save as’ and select .PSD file instead of the default .KRA. But the files I’ve saved in that format were basic Krita files with a few regular paint layers and no additional coding/masking/functions, and I didn’t notice any difference when opening in Photoshop. I edited, saved, and opened back up in Krita and the changes were there and I just carried on in Krita (as I much prefer drawing in it to PS), but I was glad that they seemed to accept each other’s files (for what I was doing on them anyway) as I needed to submit it in a Photoshop compatible format.

interesting! im mostly looking for krita to translate in PS mostly to keep the quality of the artwork high as I edit a few things in PS to just have a higher quality artwork in general

to everyone: thanks for the replies! my art project doesn’t have any masks and such (unless you count blending mode bc some of my layers are set on multiply for shading purposes) so I think it should be ok!

To my experience with that workflow it is best create the PSD file in the original program ( Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint ) and then edit inside Krita with no issues. This is strange too because where it is created has an impact as despite both being a psd file they are read different. But editing over both is fine … No idea why this is.

It’s better to use “Export” for any file format that is not .kra, because then it keeps the remembered filename as .kra and if you use ctrl+S, it will save into the .kra, not .psd. And you should always keep .kra files around (it’s the only format that can handle Krita’s everything).
