Cara Dune (The Mandalorian - Ch 16)

It’s been a while since I posted any pieces here and, as if I had been keeping up, I’ll be uploading my pics in the order I drew them. So! Going back in time here a little bit…

This post, drawn in spring 2023, was a year after my previous portrait (Margaret Hale). After my initial wading in the digital art waters in 2022, I didn’t really do any drawing at all until the 2023 portrait contest. Very excited for the free week-long course that Paintable was hosting, I wanted to prepare myself by drawing a practice portrait. (To be clear - I wasn’t gonna cheat here  . This portrait was meant to refresh my memory of the lessons and to awaken my dormant drawing skills.)

My source ref here is Cara Dune, played by Gina Carano, in the Mandalorian season 2 finale [Top tier episode, in my opinion, of anything Star Wars!]. I had just recently watched the finale and this shot of Cara literally hit me with the thought “Wow, nice shot! That’d be a good one to draw.” So I did :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: … making this my 3rd digital artwork in color.

Although I didn’t enter this picture into the portrait contest, I’m really glad I did it. I’m grateful for the experience and happy with how it turned out! Hope you enjoy it too!

As with my last portrait, just sharing the transitional phases of the picture. From finalizing the basic line art to laying in base color shapes before the subsequent stages of rendering and detailing. Because I didn’t have to upload it daily for five days, I’m including a few more chapter breaks, so to speak. (For me, I love seeing the breakdown/stages of people’s work - so forgive my excess pics!) (P.S. Big thanks to my bro for helping me make this GIF )

Hello,

I think you’ve done very well here. Much better that I’m able, and only your third one. Very nice indeed. I watched the Mandalorian. Your work represents her very well.

Wow! This came out really well! This was definitely a good shot to capture!

Hi @relink ! Thank you so much for browsing my picture and for your very kind comments!! Really glad you enjoyed it. It’s so fun to share the fandom!

Thank you very much @Smeep ! Her character’s so active in the show, it was real nice to find her in such a soulful pose. Thanks for looking and commenting!!

@FireShepherd I also enjoy seeing an artists break down of the process. This is an amazing portrait, well balanced and character driven. Well done!

Thanks for the comments, @I_J10 !! So glad you liked seeing the stages. It helps me when I hit that inevitable “ugh” stage of a project : to remember that all finished artworks had those ‘ugly’, but critical, steps along the way. :slightly_smiling_face:
