This just SEEMS like it would be a feature? Sometimes I use a colorize mask but then want to tweak the hues a little. I would love to just select one of the color swatches in the tool options and adjust it. Instead I have to manually erase and replace each stroke, since none of the usual tools for doing that en masse seem to work on colorize layers either. Am I missing something obvious?
My process:
- Use the Colorize Mask to block in my flats (this is done with any colors, going anywhere; I’m only interested in separating the spaces at this point).
- When finished, duplicate the Colorize Mask and hide the original.
- Right click the duplicated Colorize Mask within the Layer Docker and select Convert > Convert to Paint Layer.
- Using Layer > Split > Split Layer I separate the various colors into individual, alpha locked, layers.
It will be at step 3, where you’d have two choices. You could do what I do (step 4), where you’d have the option to edit the colors with any tool/feature, because they’d be on separate paint layers. Or you could leave the converted Colorize Mask as one Paint Layer and use the Fill Tool (with its Fill Mode set to “Fill all Regions of Similar Color”) to change the colors, as needed.
Unfortunately that negates that main strength of the colorize mask for me, which is that it dynamically detects regions as I adjust the lineart. This doesn’t solve my problem.
I have an idea for a Feature Request topic.
It seems that the Colorize Mask has an internal ordered palette that is populated as you proceed with the successive different colours that you choose to use (with one of those colours marked as the chosen transparency indicator).
Have a facility to save the colorize mask internal palette as an ordinary named palette.
Also have the facilty to load the colorize mask internal palette from an ordinary named palette.
Then, in use, to change colours, you save the current colourize mask palette as an ordinary palette called ColMask-A.
Then you edit the colours on ColMask-A using the normal palette editing facilities.
Then you load the colorize mask internal palette from ColMask-A.
You could also have Colmask-B and ColMask-C etc. as pre-made colourizing variations or whatever other ‘clever tricks’ you can think of.
I think this assumes that the colours on the colorize mask are indexed colours chosen from the colorize mask palette with a limit on the number of different internal palette colour values.
I’d still rather be able to change individual colors without the extra step of saving and loading a palette, but that would be an improvement. Feel free to submit your idea and I’ll submit mine if a couple more answers don’t solve it.
I was suggesting a possible idea to you, for your further consideration and development.
I think you should propose your own requirements as a Feature Request if some satisfactory answers are not forthcoming soon.
