Clip Studio Paint moving to a subscription model for version 2.0

Oh okay so the update pass price has also time limit. Atleast I should be allowed to keep the version that I last paid for. reverting the software to previous version is unheard of  what happens if I made files with 2.1 and then my pass expired and then the files will not be opened in 2.0 due to missing fix or new feature

Well from my understanding is that the update pass will give you the latest version update, not in between, and when the time limit of the update pass finish, then go back to the permanent version of the 1 time payment that u first bought, can be 2.0 or maybe u bought it when 2.2 already updated.

I guess the reason why you cant keep the updated version u bought, maybe the update pass of 1 year have a very low price so u cant have that latest version permanently. It is said that update pass has lower price than the annual subscription value.

And yea it does say in the faq, that some new feature in the newer version cant be use in the older version when u lost the update pass. I guess it can open but depends what is the feature, u cant edit it? Just say u just lost that particular feature.

That is a bummer. I’ve had Clip Studio Paint for ages and I got it for a really cheap price as part of an offer years ago but I wouldn’t want to do a subscription thing. I hardly use it anyway these days, I did think it was handy that I could use my old Photoshop brushes in it but other than that I use Krita pretty much exclusively for everything I’m doing these days.

Might turn more users from CSP to Krita. If I were a market expert, I’d use the opportunity to reach out to CSP users with intention to inform about Krita. Well, I’m not, but the thought occured to me

According to my understanding, it should be more like “VIP” in online games. You have it in your local software, but it cannot be used…

New features for the perpetual version will be included in each major version (2.0, 3.0, etc.), however, new feature updates will not be provided free of charge.

Microsoft already did this for Office…at least Office 365…I’ve unfortunately been subscribed for a few years now… :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

I’ve refused to subscribe to Adobe or Corel stuff though!

Now that’s a shot in the foot CSP team did, if they just did it like “you will need to buy 2.0 … 3.0 …etc again” i would be totally fine and a lot of people too, i have CSP for about 5 years i think and got free updates all this time, i think the developers need to be payed for their work and would be ok to pay for a new major version after all this time.
But what they did is very awful and confusing for the consumer.

Probably yes, but the way it’s describe on the site it make it look like you will have to use a old version, not a new version with the new features locked or hided. this could really confuse costumers.

That chart they use to describe the versions differences is also a bit confusing overall, and considering that people on internet don’t read things too much anymore there’s already a lot of comments on Twitter thinking they will not be able to use their 1.0 anymore after the change.

Gotta love what’s happening on Twitter today. Kudos to whoever is handling the Krita_Painting account.

My favourite CSP tweet so far (so many retweets!):

I avoided CSP because of the price point (from what i read on the website, the one time purchase is 50USD) although it looked very promising to use. With how similar Krita is to CSP’s layout and other features, I chose Krita because it is free and the ability to add custom reasources. I remember when Adobe decided to do the subscription model and a bunch of people ditched adobe. I wouldn’t be surprised that a bunch of users would do the same thing if CSP goes against their users and keeps the subscription model.

Yeah, I was pretty shocked when I heard about it on Twitter. I Googled it to see if it was true and BAM! It is.
I have never felt so betrayed. I’ve been using CSP for two years - the EX version for the 3d models and animation feature. I just couldn’t believe they’d do this after all the praise they got over the years.
Then again, what could I really expect. They’re a company, and all companies strive to make bank. I just thought the licenses and GOLD membership subs were enough.

Looking forward to learning Krita though.

honestly, after what CSP did with some brush I made in the past for it.(whole circus of issues) I was already on the fence about the app really and only used it really to finished up my last semester university. :mortar_board:

Only issue I’ll have with csp now is transfer brushes I pervious use/made in the app into other apps. I was already in the process of doing it/planning on it. Yet with news I figure I might have less time than anticipated :expressionless:

I started using krita about 10 months ago as I jumped on the linux ship, and while I’m loving it and all, I used CSP since 2013 so this bothers me to a personal level, considering how many people I’ve recommended it to, always talked well of, I even got the EX license at some point.

I don’t support subscription based services, at least not when it’s work software, and I refuse to recommend something like that, the thought of telling a newcomer who’s just getting started with art to go spend on a subscription makes me feel itchy.

The only thing I’m really missing that I still use csp for are 3D models, but I want to believe krita will get them in the future, as I have read that what they need is someone who’s willing to code them in.
Otherwise, it has almost everything and in certain cases it’s plain better.

I feel like I pulled a clairvoyant move switching to krita and this change makes any potential regrets vanish in thin air

You could learn about making brushes in Krita here (video by Ramon Miranda):

I hope that helps a bit.

Just use blender(mbLab addon) and drag and drop the rendered image to krita. The 3d model in CSP is a pain to manipulate comparing to blender rigs. I am not sure Krita would need 3d feature, but this makes sense if that’s something cloud service related, where 3d meshes are available in cloud store for ppl not familiar with 3d modeling.

Well, it’s kinda sad a bit. “The main competitor of Krita” will into “subscription model”. :o:
But that’s unfortunately the sign of nowadays - slowly imposed - global trend: more and more things will be “on rent”. :frowning:
And then, later, the known slogan will come true:
" You will own nothing, and you will be happy!" :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Hope this will not happen to hardware in the near future.
I hate in the US, after you buy a house you still need to pay property tax every year, that’s BS.
