Clip Studio Paint moving to a subscription model for version 2.0

Article: Changes to the Windows/macOS One-time Purchase (Perpetual) Version in 2023 (clipstudio.net)

I saw this on twitter quite recently and understandably many artists are quite unhappy with this upcoming change. Edited to add: CSP is changing to a subscription model to access updates, while you are allowed to buy a perpetual license for a version and can stay on it permanently.

CSP has already had a subscription model for its mobile tablet versions (Android/Ipad) so this was probably only a matter of time. Very thankful that Krita exists.

RIP to all those artists who were endorsing CSP as a frontline fighter to the evil Adobe company.

Just last year, I said this when discussing ZBrush:

Yay im using krita. Thank god i didnt bought csp before. I guess a lot of new artists will start using krita (or medibang) as long as they know krita exist.

I did not like using medibang or ibis paint cause even thou they are free, there are more advanced stuff that must be unlock with subscription, and i hate i dont get a full benefit.

For pros i think a little bit hard to go to krita because they dont like to change and have the money to spend on subscription. Also illegally download like photoshop’s user also an option.

Honestly now open source software are getting better and better and really compete. Like blender, davinci resolve, krita.

Welp, i was thinking of gifting this to my friend.
Time to slowly influence them to go get krita XD .

OTH i hope that those turned off by this and decided to swithch to Krita go here and participate. The tool i see the most that needs help is Text [ a major obstacle for some] so I hope with the possible influx of user that funding / possible dev can be found to hel wothera with it.

deif_lou is already tackling alot of feature that csp seems to have with the fills. Other improvements proposed by devs are also shaping well. I feel krita is in right place to catch them.

Im happy that when i choose to dabble in digital arts that i went with OSS route [blender, gimp, krita] seeing what blender become - i feel the same can too with krita.

I read they even join Zuckerberg’s Meta.

Out of curiosity tho, does anyone know whether it was already planned and known before this announcement that the company’s going to charge users for the each major CSP versions(1,2,3,and so on) or not?

I hate the subscription model!

@kacart me too! What happens to my work when the $$ runs out and I don’t have anything to spare for a very long time? No $, no artwork! I know that “it’s only a few dollars” but that could stand in the way of being able to pay important bills (causing checks to bounce.) Many are in this situation.
I’m so glad that software like Krita exists. :+1:t2:

You might have read the news today that Clip Studio Paint will release v.2 in 2023. To upgrade from version 1 you need to by either a new perpetual license or an upgrade pass (a subscription plan).
Offering a perpetual license is a good idea, because a lot of people hate subsciptions, however there is a catch… The perpetual license for v.2 will not give you an update for 2.1, which you will only get with another upgrade pass/subscription. I have mixed feelings with this. It seems like they gradually want to phase out perpetual licenses for subscriptions. To pay for upgrades is understandable, but why not make it a single upgrade price? I guess we should be happy that perpetual licenses are still there, but for how much longer?

As a cause of this, I can see a lot of users trying out or switching to Krita. Perhaps the community and the devs could chime in to lspread the word? I try to do the best from my part.

I have come from Photoshop, then switched to CSP as it was so much better for art. I still like the program, but have now almost fully switched to Krita, as it just works so well (version 5 is amazing).

Hi

A topic has already been open about this subject

@raghukamath maybe you can merge the both?

They might keep the yearly update pass at reasonable rate. Those who were paying already will not switch this will only hinder the hobbyist and low income group artists from developing world.

It was only a matter of time. I knew this would happen when they introduced the subscription plans for mobile device.

There are rumours and theories that Microsoft is investigating possible ways of using subscription models for various elements of its products and services, including the OS itself one day.

What a bummer! I really wanted to save up for a CSP license. If only to check things with this software that are supposedly impossible with Krita, and then look for ways in Krita to prove otherwise. That is now cancelled due to (my) bankruptcy!

@Michelist same here.

That’s possible yes, they already have subscription for office 365.
Also, I think there’s plan to force you to get a microsoft account to be able to use windows instead of creating local account… (but Ok, i’m far from all this things so maybe the rumor are not true…?)

The monthly subscription system is also applied with cars about some options:

I think Tesla have similar subscription for options on the car you’ve already paid a high price…

If I buy 2.0 license and update pass for 2.1 and then stop paying for updates. Then in 2.5 I see some nice feature and i will purchase the update pass. Will they then give me all the in-between versions for price of one update pass? Or will they charge me for each intermediate version

In any case it doesn’t affect us , it is okay for a lounge topic but I would not be worried and spend time in debating this.

I got a license myself a short while back because there was a feature in CSP that wasn’t in krita. I ended up never using it but I still recommended it to other artists because I genuinely thought it was something worth supporting.

CSP has a wide wealth of tools to assist in comic making, as well as a robust library of !user contributed! resources that would be hard to maintain if the program didn’t have the community goodwill that it just very quickly brought crashing down in one tweet.

Actually, I have a lot of questions about what their future plans really are, since they didn’t really release a roadmap of planned features for 2.x onwards, or even how much the subscription is gonna be. Will the features even be worth the update pass cost? We don’t know because there’s been nothing but silence since.

The reaction probably wouldn’t have been this bad if that wasn’t the case.

@raghukamath When the update pass expires it will make you use the last permanent version you own, so 2.0 in this case. You don’t get to keep 2.1. When you purchase update pass again for 2.5 I assume you get all updates in between, but that wasn’t im the FAQ
