I have an 8-layered file. I’d like to use the Clone brush to remove (replace) a portion of one of the layers. I Ctrl-click on the source area, then try to paint where I want the source to be copied but the mouse pointer, empty circle, doesn’t move when I try to paint. The mouse pointer does move when the left mouse button is not down but it freezes when I press the left mouse button.
The clone brush does work properly when I am working on a single image/layer but not on the 8-layer file.
I have only 1 layer visible and it is selected so that it is in fact the layer the edits will apply to.
Oh, also, does it matter that the layers consist of “linked” and not embedded image files?
And in the brush editor, you may need to select “Clone From All Visible Layers” under “Painting Mode” if you want to have all layers as input rather than a specific one.
Also, you can’t clone from a File Layer to another layer using the Ctrl+Alt+click selection method, which is used to clone content from a different layer to a paint layer.
You can’t draw on a File Layer but you can clone from a File Layer if you select the “Clone From All Visible Layers” option in the brush editor.
The intent is to remove a powerline in a photo on one of the layers by cloning the blue sky nearby in place of the powerline. This “error” exists in only one layer and I’m fine with applying the change to that same layer, I don’t need the involvement of any other layers.
Then select the layer with the powerline and blue sky.
Use Ctrl+click on some blue sky to select that region as a source.
Then use the cursor to paint over the powerline.
If you’ve been making any changes in the brush editor, open the brush editor and click the ‘Reload the brush preset’ icon.
@Takiro is right. It was just a general hint that this might be necessary if you want to clone across layers. But you have to let file layers out of the calculation.
