Coloring/shading without touching the art line?

So I’ve learned how to quickly color in lines without leaving white space (Filler tool F). Now Im curious how I can shade or color with diferent layers in a group without touching the main art work line? I’ve tried playing around locking stuff but my main line always gets overwritten.

The lineart layer should be above the flat colouring and all other layers in the group.

Can you upload a full screen screenshot of your artwork?

You just have to put the color layer behind the linart (lower than the linearrt on the layer stack) and the shading layer in between.

Thanks for your responses. Like Im a total nab when it comes to Krita or layers.

It does indeed work when I put my lineart at the top but Im now dealing with issues Ive solved before.
My shading extends now beyond my lineart. How can I limit the shading within frame when Im coloring on layer below?

Within a group, you can use alpha inheritance:

Alpha inheritance doesn’t prevent paint being applied to a layer (that’s what alpha lock does).
Alpha inheritance prevents paint being seen/composited if the layers (in the group) below are transparent.
So, for your shading layer, above the flat colour layer, you’d enable alpha inheritance for the shading layer and any paint that went outside the lineart would be blanked out because the colour layer had no paint (zero alpha) outside the lineart.

You can do the same thing with a highlighting layer above (or below) the shading layer.
Remember to only do this inside a group to limit the range of the inheritance.

  1. You have to assign a color label to the lineart layer. Right click the layer in the layers docker and select the label at the top of the menu that shows up.
  2. In the fill tool options, select as reference the “color labeled layers” option in the reference section, and then select the color label you chose for the line art in the list that appears.
  3. Select the layer you want to apply the fill in, and use the fill tool there.
