Convert layer group to file layer without flattening?

I have been searching for this but have not found an answer.

Is there a way to convert a group of layers to a File Layer without flattening it to a png?

I have a habit of working on artwork as a whole and when it starts getting to big I want to break it out into File Layers, but right now I lose all of my layers if I do that. Is there a way to convert without losing my layers? I thought it would saved out the selected layers to a separate kra file, but I don’t see any options for that.

Thanks!

Select the group and use “Convert to…” -> “to File Layer…” and it should show you this option. If you don’t see it, it might be because I’m using Krita Plus from the website - in this case you might need to wait a month if you prefer not to use development versions (although this is the “safer” development version). But I think it’s already available in 4.3.0. too.

EDIT: wait, no, it does convert to .png… hmm.

EDIT 2: Just change the filename from filename.png to filename.kra

Amazing! Edit #2 works! I did not think about changing the file name or even consider that was an option. Thanks!

It looks kinda not great in terms of UIX, it’s a new feature so maybe the person implementing it didn’t think about that.

There was some issue with kra in the files layer. I remember there was some discussion or commit which disabled kra file layer. Because you can have a kra as file layer which can then have another kra as file layer and another and possible the main document as kra inside the file layer like a loop  I don’t really know the details may be that has changed

I think if Krita just loaded the mergedimage.png it should be just fine… but I wonder, what with HDR then?
