Copying layer without appending "copy of-"

I have an odd question about something rather trivial: Is there a way to copy a layer without the suffix “Copy of…” getting automatically appended to the name of the copy?
I often have the need to create a whole bunch of identical copies of a specific layer, and I want them all to have the exact same name. I have a bit of an obsession with having my layers properly labeled, and It’s annoying to have to edit every name manually.

I know that in the past - like, two years ago, I reckon - that was the default, but one of the updates changed it. I’m hoping that there is some hidden settings option that lets me revert it.

I know that I can circumvent this by putting my layer in a group first, then copying the whole group, as all the child layers keep their names unaltered, but that also requires extra busywork, and that’s what I’m trying to minimize.

I don’t think it’s possible right now. It would be a nice little Python plugin though.

I just tried copying layers as you describe and I don’t get the “copy of” suffix. My copied layers have the same name as the layers being copied. I’m using the latest version of Krita 4.2.9.

I think @Michos has been using ‘Duplicate Layer or Mask (Ctrl+J) which does put ‘Copy of’’ in front of the layer name, but not more than once with multiple duplicates.
I’m sure this issue has been raised as a formal bug report but I can’t find it.
