Couldn't open PNG files on Android version of Krita 5.2.2

Ran into a weird issue where every time I tried to open a PNG, even ones that I created with Krita itself, it gave me a “File type not supported” error.

Tried restarting, deleting cache, no dice. I had to uninstall and reinstall the app, but now I can open PNGs again. Didn’t need to delete the user data. No idea what triggered it to begin with.
For the record, I’m using a crusty, crotchety old Samsung Galaxy Tab A w/ S Pen (SM-P580) that I installed an unofficial build of LineageOS 19 (Android 12) on. My issue may have been to do with the spit-and-baling-twine nature of this oddball setup, but I suppose I may as well put this out there in case someone else runs into it.

Were you opening it as a reference image using the reference image tool?

Opening the file directly to edit, or importing into an already open document.
I didn’t try using the reference tool because I wasn’t aware of it at the time.

I see “external storage” is part of the address. Any problem opening any other files types from this location?

Why does it look like your file is named “*.png.” that dot at the end… I don’t know if it is the punctuation or the file name… Well I cannot choose anything what I’m not supposed to use when opening a file. :man_shrugging:

I had no issues opening other file types. I converted one of the .png files that I was trying to open into a .jpg using another program and it worked as normal.
I also tried opening .png files from multiple other locations on my tablet, and the same thing happened every time.

Come to think of it, shouldn’t the output in the dialogue box have been just the filename? The file path is weird, too, I’m pretty sure that the file path should have been something like “0/internal_storage/Downloads” or something like that.
It almost seems like the file browser may have fed Krita an incorrect/ incorrectly formatted filepath when attempting to open .png files for some odd reason?
Yeah, something doesn’t smell right here.

Just for reference, this is a bug of Android version still occurring as for 2025 January (malformed file path). The work-around is to open the PNG as a new document (“Open” works fine) and then copy-paste where needed (into the layer or choosing Clipboard in Reference tool).
