Crashes (mostly freezes), no clue about log errors

Brand of the device: Asus, 7 years old
System: Linux Kubuntu with X-desktop
RAM: 8GB
Krita Appimage downloaded a few weeks ago

can anybody give me a hint what else to do? i tried several things, but… i am not at all an expert.

i really dont know what to do, i googled a lot, but nothing helps.

the problem is: i can only paint a few minutes, then the whole thing freezes. the laptop is working very hard (makes loud fanning noise) while painting and after freezing it continues to fan loudly, if i leave it like that and wait half an hour, nothing changes.

i managed to find the logs in the terminal, so i can read a looot of lines with kryptic words in it. some lines are in yellow, very few are in red. but nothing of those tells me something.

what i wonder about: why is there no read or yellow error log right before the crashing? i post here the last five minutes, hope thats ok. i dont know, how long it will be, i will test and maybe delete it again so as not to spam the forum.

here is the log from the terminal - 12 minutes before the freeze (last 5 minutes painting with memileo brush (small size))

edit: i put another log of the next freeze in the answer-posts, please have a look there (its in two parts…)

is there a way to make the code shorter so i do not spam the forum with this looong code?

Little plus icon on the top bar, ya can put it in and even a "title"

here is the first part of the latest freeze (unfortunately i still havent found out how to add a title to the summary):

this is the second part. it was too long to put it in one post, sorry.

in the log this time directly before freezing a RED line, finally…:

Jun 18 11:36:11 katie-laptop wpa_supplicant[1113]: nl80211: kernel reports: key not allowed

does that help to understand why it freezes all the time?

These look like dmesg logs, the line you’re pointing out here is a WLAN thing, it’s probably unrelated.

Does Krita freeze on you or is it the entire laptop?

thanks for your reply! krita and everything freezes. i cannot move the mouse or only very slow and cant click or do anything.

ok about the internet thing. i know my wlan is weak, at least thats what the numbers say (and the waves in the symbol of my wlan, there are three waves maximum, but i have only one wave normally. normally i dont have a lot of problems with the internet.

could it be the internetconnection thats a problem for krita? i think it just cannot handle me painting fast and with memileo. when i painted with charcoal it did not freeze that often.

is there a way to get more informative logs? i know in krita there is the log under help, but it does not record the last bootsession, only the current, so after a freeze and restart i cannot read nothing there. and there is the log viewer docker, but the things it logs are even less understandabale for me…

If your entire computer freezes then the problem might not be Krita itself. And since it’s a hang with high load, it’s very unlikely that there’s any relevant logs.

Are you still able to get to another virtual terminal when it hangs like this? You can do so by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, +F2 etc. to go other terminals. Once in another terminal, you can log into it and run sudo top or similar to check what’s going on. Afterwards, you can log out again by pressing Ctrl+D and then go back to the terminal that X is running on, that’s usually 1 or 7. Ideally try that before you get a hang so that you know how it works.

Otherwise, you can unplug unnecessary devices and turn off your WLAN adapter, it wouldn’t hurt to try. It could also be your graphics driver, so you can also try going into Settings → Configure Krita → Display → Canvas Acceleration and disable Canvas Graphics Acceleration there. Restart Krita afterwards.

Hi @Endel_Fruehmaus. I’m so sorry that you are having crash problems with Krita. I know why your app is crashing and freezing because your exact problem used to happen to me on my old laptop.

My old laptop would constantly freeze and crash and I’d lose my art simply because I didn’t have enough storage.

Krita eats RAM for breakfast and I realized that 8GB was not enough. I had to get another computer with more storage and now it works a treat.

If your laptop is able to just put another memory stick in then i suggest that you buy one with 16GB of RAM and add it to your laptop.

Otherwise, besides buying another laptop, there isn’t really a permanent way to stop the crashes and freezing. (I wasted tons of time trying)

I hope I helped!

Thank you for your reply! the thing is, i dont really know if the “small” RAM is the problem - i mean krita says that it works fine with 8 GB Ram like mine…

if i order a bigger RAM-stick (yes it would be possible, i researched it) and it still dont work - i wont get my money back, and its more than 100 euros…

maybe my laptop has another problem… it often says: “hogged cpu” and the fan is so loud sometimes.

Hopefully it does. Sorry about your problems

well i dont know.

i have been testing around the last days. i reached the point where i am not sure anymore, that the settings in krita are reliable.

i mean this: if i set the maxium usage of ram in krita to a low number, p.ex. 2000 mb, i expected my system monitor ram pie not to exceed this (plus of course the amount of used ram thats there from the beginning, just opening krita after a restart, which for me is 3,8 gb - so 3,8 gb plus 2 gb is 5,8 gb - but my ram-pie fills up more and more as a i paint along (and we are talking only about less than a minute painting (with memileo for this test)), so that before freezing it has used all the ram (nearly 8 GB).

why is this? 3,8 plus 2 gb is 5,8 gb - why does it still use the whole 8 gb ram?

does anyone know?

@Drawpile wow i did not see you reply at all. its a strange order in this forum, difficult to be sure that you have seen all the answers only by looking in the thread. maybe i should look for notifications (i have them turned on to notice me via email, but it seems it did not this time, maybe because there also was another answer at the same time…?)

i will try using a virtual console when it freezes, i will try it now, and post here what happens… thanks! also for the other tipps. will think about all of them.

@Drawpile

ok i tried to go into a virtual console (wisely testing it BEFORE a freeze as you suggested :-)) but: i cannot log in there, it says my password is incorrect. i can see it spelled out in the line above, so i know its NOT incorrect. i used different keyboards to do it, nothing helps. not in any of the virtual terminals - i googled it and found that it could be that my shell isnt visible, but it is. is there another solution to this problem, that i cannot log in into the virtual terminals?

ok i did more tests with the system-monitor open, so that i could see how the ram and cpu behave…

all in all i tried to change a lot of things in the krita-settings:

solution: NO MEMILEO :-(((

max ram, max cpu, bigger swapfile, turning open GL on and off… strange enough, krita did not behave consistenty, meaning for example: after i augmented the swapfile to nearly the maximum and tried krita again, one time it went really well and so i thought this was the magic i had been lookin for, just making the swapfile bigger… but next time i tried it, there was the same problem as before (ram flooded in about 1-2 minutes max with then freezing)

(i always, in every test, used the same memileo brushes and made similar manner and number of strokes, to see when would the ram be totally under water and krita would freeze. i always did open krita fresh after a restart of the computer to clear the ram)

so now i see that the only solution is: not use memileo, because its too heavy. with charcoal or mixerbrush it does not happen…

thats really a shame because i like the “oil-mimicking” of memileo very much… :frowning:

That’s very sad. I have a “lite” version on my Android tablet that does well with the ram constrictions of an Android tablet. I got it from the earlier posts about those brushes.

a lite-version of the memileo-brushes? could you link it, if you can find it? thank you!!

Try this:

You may have to go through that thread a bit.

Sorry!! I had hit the delete button and it deleted! Can’t find a way to undo that. I’ve asked a moderator for help.

Meanwhile, the bundles you’d want are the Memileo360light_03 and Memileo360light_02

unfortunately i cannot find them… not in the thread and not with google…
