Customizing Brush Size and Zoom Options

I’ve been trying to get into using Krita lately, but minor interface quirks are killing my interest. I’ve been using SAI/CSP for 10+ years on a daily basis and trying to relearn small but frequent muscle memory moves is more hassle than it’s worth, so I would really appreciate some specific answers if anyone has them.

Namely, how do I configure Krita to change my brush size if I hold CTRL+ALT and drag the stylus? There’s no specific listing for that in the Canvas Input Settings that I can find. I know you can hold SHIFT and drag, but as I said, I’m fighting 10 years of muscle memory here. I’ve googled this on every occasion in the past when I’ve tried to learn Krita, and I can never find the answer.

Second, how do I set it up so that CTRL+SPACE+drag - specifically LEFT and RIGHT zooms the canvas? Right now it works if I drag up and down, which I find really odd, despite it possibly being a rational UI decision, again, it’s fighting my 10+ years of muscle memory.

The second one is not a dealbreaker as I don’t zoom in and out 10 times a minute, but I change my brush size compulsively, and I’d really appreciate if someone could help me set Krita up so I’m not distracted by little UI quirks.

Thanks!

Description of the issue (you can include screenshots):

If I’m not mistaken you can set the shortcut preset to SAI so you have everything like in SAI except for the things that have no equivalent in SAI or in Krita. Perhaps this helps already so you don’t have to relearn things.

There’s a drop down menu in the Canvas Input screen that has a “Paint Tool SAI Compatible” option, but it doesn’t seem to do anything that I can tell.

I suppose it’s possible I messed up some settings file long ago when I was dicking around with Krita, but it’s been that way across two different computers, so I don’t know what to do about it.

I guess I could totally uninstall Krita and hunt down all the entries in the registry and then reinstall it, but I was hoping for a quicker fix using the supplied tools.

That’s too bad. Maybe not all shortcuts get remapped. I don’t know much about that part.

Reinstalling would do nothing because the config files are in AppData. Krita doesn’t use the registry, simply deleting the config files would do. There is also a “Reset Configuration” button somewhere, I think it’s in the Settings Menu (not the Settings Windows) right on the menu bar.

Can someone at least confirm that the setting I should be messing with is Settings… Configure Krita > Canvas Input Settings, and then Mouse Button > ALT+CTRL+Left Button, and that should be set to Primary Mode?

BTW, how do I know what Primary through Tertiary Modes actually do? The whole C.I.S. menu has always been really cryptic.

Still trying to get this to work.

Config files are definitely not in AppData. The only folder under Krita is “qmlcache” and it doesn’t contain a file called “kritarc.” I checked under Local and Roaming. Same story in both cases.

Okay, I finally figured out the brush size problem I’ve been having.

The alternate invocation setting that by default samples current layer color, set to CTRL+ALT+LMB was interfering with setting “Change Primary Setting” to the same shortcut. Once I deleted the Alternate shortcut, the Change Primary started working.

Also it didn’t help that for several years, I thought the stuff in the Alternate menu was the thing that controlled brush size. Actions labeled “Primary Mode” and “Normal” are incredibly unhelpful.

Obtuse UI is one of the hallmarks of programmers creating UI and not users or artists.

Now to figure out how to fix the Up/Down Zoom thing.

The good thing in Krita is that you can request or discuss a better wording for this. From what I see it is primary setting for not just brushes but other tools too. The descriptions also says brush size. I think the wording can be made more descriptive.

If I am not wrong and remember correctly, there were talks to merge this with the shortcuts section
