I admire the stylized landscape art of Phyllis Shafer. Here, I used one of my own photos and tried to use her style in painting it. Don’t know if I’ll try the style again, but I wanted to try it. She makes it look so easy!
Well done!
Looks like my back yard.
That looks so nice!
The art is stunning and the colors make me feel relaxed
A masterpiece landscape. Sky, foreground and first plane, all masterly done!
Thanks you guys! But I feel most of the credit belongs to Ms. Shafer, since I imitated her style. Is that even a thing? Using someone else’s style to create your own art?
Yup, it’s a thing. Something to help others learn new things.
Here is my reference photo. And a link to Phyllis Shafer’s art page, if you’re interested in seeing her beautiful landscapes.

You’ve done very well to use her style. Beautiful.
what brush did you use for the texture of the flower stem? the one with the opacity texture. Your work always amazed me.
I wonder if Ms. Shafer actually painted outside. “Plein air” typically denotes painting on location, and she calls herself a plein air artist. If that’s the case, then her style feels difficult to achieve on location… unless she did multiple sessions.
EDIT: never mind, saw a pic of her actually painting on location… that answered my question.
Yes, she typically paints plein air. Definitely seems like it would be difficult to paint so stylized in a plein air setting. I did see a short clip of her painting outside and she started with rough large shapes and colors first, which kinda surprised me.
Really pleasing piece to look at
Nice! Well done.
Unfortunately I had to go to the hospital this morning, everyone is ok, and one of the departments had about ten of her paintings. The funny thing was that I had looked at these pictures on multiple different occasions and was always floored by them, but I now know the artist, thanks.
@Sineater Hope you are ok!
Everyone is healthy, just a checkup.
@rosa Sorry for the delay in answering your question. I just saw this for some reason Lol . Do you mean the stems in the foreground flowers, right below the yellow flower heads?
yes the stem, the texture is very interesting
