Exporting project as JPG vs PNG - question

This screenshot shows a problem. The image on the right is the original Krita canvas. On the left are two exported images (pinned back into the project for comparison). The upper image was exported as a PNG file. The bottom image exported as a JPG. The JPG file is much darker. Why is that? I might understand that the PNG file is a better quality file format but why the drastic change in color between the two formats. I’ve not noticed this problem before.

One other comment: When I compare the exported JPG file to the Krita project (using Windows Photo App to display the JPG file) it looks the same. It’s only when I pin the file back into Krita that the image gets darker.

Any ideas?

Did you use the References Images Tool to bring the .png and .jpg images in for comparison?
I ask in case someone knows if that is significant.

You’re using a 16-bit sRGB G10 colour space and that may have an effect on the exported .jpg image.
Someone who knows about this sort of thing will be able to confirm/deny that.

I think it would be a good idea to convert the image colour space to 8-bit RGB/A default before exporting the .jpg.
You can Undo the conversion after you’ve exported it.

Thx Ahab for the response. I’m embarrassed to admit I don’t know what those options are you’re referring to. For the past two years I’ve been exporting (or doing a save as…) using whatever the default JPG options were. I’ve never noticed a problem I guess because I’ve never reimported the JPG image back into the project from whence it came. I’ve printed these JPG files out on my ink jet printer with no issue… uploaded them to the internet with no issue. The image will appear slightly different depending on what device I’m using to view them (i.e. smartphone) but for all intents and purposes no problem with darkness or anything noticeable.

Just as a test, I imported the JPG image back into Krita using the Import Layer feature and it looks fine using it that way. Something to do with the Pin tool…

One interesting thing: I opened a project from a year ago and tried the same experiment. I exported the Krita artwork as a JPG and then pinned it back into the project and it looked the same. No problem. However, when I tried to pin in this particular JPG file into another unrelated Krita project it has the same dark problem. Leads me to believe this new problem is related to this specific project.

On second thoughts, t’s probably more sensible and safer to make a copy of the .kra file, do Flatten Image on that, then convert it to 8-bit RGB/A default before exporting.
Somebody who knows more about this area will probably be along soon.

Image → Convert Image Colour Space is used to convert the entire image.

That may be the case so I hope we find out from someone soon

well - ok - changing it to 8-bit RGB/A before export fixed the problem. I guess that would be a solution but so would exporting as a PNG file.

This so-called problem seems to be related only to the Pin tool (when importing the JPG image via the Pin tool). I think I’m confident that the JPG image I export is on par quality-wise to the original Krita canvas image. Just for reasons unknown, the Pin tool is doing something nasty to the image and it’s only in this one project. And only for JPG, not PNG.
