Hi, I’m currently using krita to draw 2D assets for my game.
The problem is that unity seems to support only PSB files, at least for bone animation.
I found a workaround which would be to basically use an online converter, but this comes with the tedium of converting each file and if i ever want to change an asset, i have to go to the previous .kra version, edit it, eliminate the previous psb file; you get what i mean.
I honestly love using krita (consider i tried most digital art software), i think the UX you managed to achieve clearly shows that it’s a software made by people that are creatives themselves, toghether with the brush engine and the brushes made by the community are features that will make me continue to use krita.
I realize that you are a team that operates on limited funds and people, so i am sure that it doesn’t make much sense to assign staff, time and effort on a compatibility issue that would benefit very few people like this one.
It just sucks that a company like Adobe can establish a monopoly on digital art and affect all corners of an industry; becasue it annoys artists in the end; of course closed source formats are part of they’r predatory marketing strategy.
Anyway let me know if PSB compatibility, or an extension that allows it, ever becomes something you guys want to add, as it would make an app i already love perfect. (krita already reads and writes to psd files but i have no idea what would take to allow read/write of PSB files).
Kinda. If the files are created by an old enough PS version or don’t use any advanced or incompatible features, then it’s still a maybe. And often enough PSDs created by Krita don’t open in PS. Honestly it’s almost luck if it works. The issue is that no dev in their right mind really wants to work on Adobe formats voluntarily because of the mess they are and the legal troubles it could potentially cause. Better don’t keep your hopes high.
Honestly i haven’t had any issue with psd files created by Krita, i mean at all, but i haven’t tried to open them in PS which is probably why..
Yeah, i get that nobody would want to work with Adobe formats in fact my hope is practically 0.
I just wanted to bring up the compatibility question.
I haven’t really found a possible solution yet, it’s just extremely annoying how they are trying to soft lock me into using they’r product even though i prefer painting in krita.
(additionally i use linux for programming and pirating photoshop is revealing to be quite hard)
What about EXR or TIFF? With TIFF, you get even layers. Would your game engine accept that?

Then you’re lucky but the Forum has many Topics about compatibility complaints and errors regarding PSDs with requests to make it at least a bit more compatible. The only safe way to save a Krita project is KRA but I can understand why some people have no choice. Interoperability is hard to achieve when one of the participants (adobe) doesn’t even care.
I vaguely remember I once read that people just renamed *.psd to *.psb and had luck with that in unity - but my memory might be wrong.
