I have photos of individuals and would like to remove everything including hair and keep their face. I’ve been using the freehand selection tool, but it is bit annoying. Are there any software or krita extensions that may assist in this process.
Welcome to the forum, @Wyatt.
That does sound like a tedious job. The only thing I can think of is to get really good at changing the selection mode to add and subtract so that you can get as accurate you want without having to redo the selections.
I don’t know if this plugin may be of help:

For complicated selections I prefer to use a selection mask and paint the selection area with a brush. The selection mask allows for partially selected pixels (keeping the alpha) so you have to make sure to use a 100% opaque brush.
Some good answers. The plugin seems interesting. I am running on Linux. If I am reading the docs right, I need to compile it into Krita source?
With the current version, your assumption is correct, but if you only want to use it as a tool or just take a look if it can fulfill your needs, then I would go for the version 1.0. Because you can download version 1.0 as a ready compiled AppImage, you have to grant it execution right via the file-properties-dialog, and then you are ready to go.
If you want to separate the resources it uses from your main installation, you can do so by creating a folder with the following 3 subfolders .cache, .config, and .local, additionally give the folder a simple short descriptive name, let’s say KritaCut and rename the AppImage to exactly the same name as this folder, so KritaCut and put it into that folder, if I’m not mistaken then you now have an independent installation of your cutting tool.
I hope someone corrects me if I have mixed up something with this AppImage construction, I don’t use Linux regularly, only in a VM for Krita-related service purposes.

Personally, I think it’s easier and faster to paste the entire face (that you want to place) on a layer above and edit with transparency mask. The tendency is for the new face to cover the previous one, by at least 70%… and what’s left, you can hide by cloning.
In Gimp and Photoshop there is a tool similar to a stamp that does cloning (as well as others). In Krita there is a brush that does this:
I found a pretty straightforward way using https://insightface.ai/ bot on Discord. Basically I copy a face from the original image and then merge it with the new face. Once that is done I paste the merge back as a layer and cut all the background out keeping the new face in the same spot as the original face. Works great.
I followed this tutorial for the installation https://youtu.be/DmsnHmNU-gc?si=hAS2R0uv1PfOSwy2
the steps are simple:
- /saveid imageid newface
- /swapid imageid oldface
Then save the generated image from the browser into a file, add it as new layer, then delete all the background color to make it transparent, with your original old faces background image.
He also goes into Midjourney starting at 2:29 which I did not use.
