This scene I drew is from the book Redwall. (It is a bit of an action/adventure sort of novel.) The story is all around an abbey of mice monks and their woodland friends. Their peaceful countryside is under threat of an oncoming army of rats determined to overtake and rule them. An initiating catastrophe occurs and a novice, the lead mouse (as depicted), is frustrated and at a loss of what he should do.
So, late at night, he’s alone and unable to sleep so he seeks the counsel via inspiration of the abbey’s legendary hero of the past, Martin the Warrior, who had saved their Redwall long ago. The warrior’s legacy is preserved in the ancient tapestry hanging in the monastery walls. (I tried to include elements of the back story into the tapestry work.)
For whatever reason, I just really felt that moment. It just jumped out, I guess. I wanted to depict that loneliness and yearning we all feel at such times of confusion and helplessness. I also included the line from the book that inspired my drawing under the image, since I felt like that completed the emotion of the scene. I also really enjoy how crucial moments are often hidden in very ordinary surroundings.
Thanks for looking!
