I’ve read that you can import ABR files to Krita(reads them as predefined brush tips) but I can’t just make it work no matter what I try.

In the linked post of mine, there is a small explanation why your ABR’s can’t be read by Krita, and two download-links for a tool that can convert most of these unreadable ABR’s.

How come some ABR files don't do anything, whilst others give the patterns?

Yes, this may be due to the Photoshop version. However, there is a tool with which you can convert all of these ABR’s into an ABR format readable by Krita, so far. Only ABR’s with copy protection, and damaged ABR’s cannot be converted.
