Filter, filter layer, or (transparancy) mask

Hi, I want to put a layer or mask on top of the source layer and work non destructive. What is the best layer or mask to work non destructive and also draw and paint? I tried several things without the result i want. How does that work?

Filter layers/masks (and Transform masks) are all non-destructive modifications to the image.

A mask will only affect the appearance of the layer to which it’s attached, i.e. its parent layer. A mask must be attached to a parent layer.

A Filter layer will affect the appearance of all the layers below it, i.e. the entire ‘view’ looking down through the layer stack.
The ‘range’ of the view is limited and restricted to a group, if it’s in a group, but that’s a separate subject.

They may seem confusing at first, if you’re not familiar with them, but they’re not difficult to use.
What sort of effect are you trying to achieve and how have you tried to do it so far?

It would be useful if you can post a full screen screenshot showing the Layers docker to explain what you have.

Hi, indeed i am just starting with krita.

What i want for now is to put a mask or layer on top or attached to the source/ draw layer 1. So i can draw and paint on the filter layer or mask layer. Without touching the source/draw layer 1.

I can do it with the colouring mask. But when i draw/paint on the colouring mask and then switch to the source/draw layer 1, the paint is also seen on this layer. So i can’t see a difference between the 2 layers when i progress. Is that adjustable? Or am i using the wrong mask/layer?

Your topic title mentions Filter Layer, Filter Mask, Transparency Mask and I mentioned the Transform Mask.
These are all very similar as I explained.

The Colourise Mask is a specialist tool used for fill colouring of lineart and is quite different from the other masks.
The manual ( https://docs.krita.org/en/ ) explains it well but the website is having difficulties at the moment.

The purpose of drawing/painting on a filter mask or layer would be to locally modify the amount of effect it has. This can be done with Filter Layers and Filter Masks. For a Transparency Mask, drawing on it modifies the transparency effect.

Again, it would be very useful and helpful if you could explain what you’re trying to do.
e.g. Do you want to modify the colours of a painted layer?
Do you want to apply blurring to an image?
Do you want to scale/shear/rotate/move an image?
Do you want local transparency variations in a layer?
Do you want contrast/brightness adjustment.

To save me the trouble of going through all the possibilities (and there are many) why don’t you say what you’re trying to do?
