Freehand Selection Lasso tool selection won't go away

New user here!

After using the freehand selection lasso tool to outline and then delete part of my image (the sky was selected and deleted in the first screenshot) , I can’t de-select that section, even if I click on the move tool (or any other tool). When I select the move tool to move the part of the image that I want to KEEP (the remaining image of the landscape), I can’t click on it. Instead, the move box only outlines the section where the marching ants were.
If I create another layer and import an image onto it, the initial selection of marching ants from my first layer transfers onto the new layer and I can’t select anything else.
AND, even if I delete the initial layer I had used the lasso tool on, the marching ants shape still appears and I don’t know how to delete it. (I do have tool options on “move current layer”)

How can I deactivate the marching ants selection so I can select other parts of my canvas?

I hope my question is clear.

Please help! (I’m on a mac, if that makes a difference.)

Thank you!

Hi!

If you no longer need a selection, you should clear it. For example, here in the menu:

(Not sure if I got your question, but hopefully this helps  )

A quick way to de-select if you don’t want to use the drop down option, is to do a single mouse click/dot with the stylus while any selection tool is activated. As long as it’s just a dot, with no drag, then it will de-activate the existing selection.

@Sketchy, then you don’t have old and shaky hands like me, for example.
But there are more ways to deactivate it, keyboard shortcuts and toolbar-buttons are those not named so far.
It is usually bound to the shortcut Ctrl + Shift + A, @YRH has it bound to Q, another way for relatively quick access is to put it into your toolbars, you can do it via ‘‘Settings’’ >> ‘‘Configure Toolbars…’’ and there you have to select one of the toolbars you want to put it in.
To redefine keyboard-shortcuts in Krita you go via ‘‘Settings’’ >> ‘‘Configure Krita’’ >> ‘‘Keyboard Shortcuts’’, if you want to change the setting for deselect, you have to search for “Select” and change “Deselect” to your liking.
Maybe you are so crazy like me and put it in all three of your toolbars? Therefore, I have one above another on the right side and the last toolbar below the canvas, with this arrangement, I always have a button near my stylus/mouse. I have also done this with “Undo” and “Redo”, and “Deselect” is between “Undo” and “Redo”. I like this arrangement because everything is quickly and easily accessible.
To have all 3 toolbars available, you have to enable the so-called “Edit” toolbar via ‘‘Settings’’ >> ‘‘Toolbars Shown’’. In version 5.2.0 and 5.2.1 it was forgotten to display its name in that menu, despite that it is selectable there!
