Freehand selection tool making too large selection when used after Contiguous Selection tool

I make a selection with the Contiguous Selection tool

I make a selection with the Freehand Selection tool with Add

But the final selection is massively larger than the one I selected.

In fact, the absolute smallest selection I can make if I use Freehand to add a Contiguous Selection is this large.

Is this a bug? Or do I need to fix a setting? I am only having this issue when using Freehand to add to a Contiguous Selection. When I add to a selection I made with Freehand, it behaves normally.

 Hello @yenrzzvezdrz, and welcome to the forum!

To give you an informed answer on this, we need to see a screenshot of your whole Krita window. If you can not show what you are painting right now, then please create a small picture showcasing your issue which is exactly recreating your current situation, like being a layer in a group. The screenshot has to show the complete window, do not cut off anything, like title or status bar.

You have to bring the tab of the Tool Options Docker in front, and draw it fully open, so that it shows all options. To draw it wider, you can grab it at its bottom or its top, depending on its position. If you can’t find it, the Tool Options Docker is the tab below the Advanced Color Selector in a freshly installed Krita, or when you are using Krita’s default Workspace, which you can call via the menu ‘‘Window’’ >> ‘‘Workspace’’ >> ‘‘Default’’. You can also restore it via “Settings” → “Dockers” and there selecting “Tool Options”, if you should have closed it.

You also need to show us your Layers Docker, where you have to select and show the layer in question and in case it is in a group, we need to see that layer in its expanded and fully visible group.

The next thing is that you have to have the Freehand Selection Tool selected, so the Tool Options Docker can show its options.

Furthermore, we usually need the following information, because they help us very often to recognize some issues:
The version number of your Krita. You can find it in “Help” → “Bug Report” behind “Version:”

From where you downloaded your copy of Krita.

The exact version of your OS, although I can see it is Windows, I don’t know which Windows.

Selection with Freehand Selection tool

Final selection, being much larger than originally selected.

Here is my information copied and pasted from the preset bug report:

Version: 5.2.9 (git ac6cae8)
Installation type: installer / portable package
Hidpi: true

Qt

Version (compiled): 5.15.7
Version (loaded): 5.15.7

OS Information

Build ABI: x86_64-little_endian-llp64
Build CPU: x86_64
CPU: x86_64
Kernel Type: winnt
Kernel Version: 10.0.26100
Pretty Productname: Windows 10 Version 2009
Product Type: windows
Product Version: 10

Hopefully that’s all of the information needed. Thank you for your response!

I can’t think of any reason why this should happen and it doesn’t happen for me using the 5.2.9 installation on Windows 10.

I used a very simple document to test this and the selection made using the Freehand Selection Tool was added to a selection that had been made using the Contiguous Selection Tool in a way that was exactly as expected:

The selection showed good clean edges when looking at its mask:
(Use Select -> Show Global Selection Mask)

Also, I can make a very small selection, down to sub-pixel size, with the Freehand Selection Tool.

Can you redo this using a new document with a simple layer structure and content in the same way that I did then see if you still have this problem with a new and simple document?

I’ve tested it on a smaller document with only two layers and the same issue occurred.

HOWEVER, the issue is thankfully now fixed!

I toggled the Freehand Selection tool mode from vector to pixel and these were the settings.

I tried turning Feather to 0, toggled back to vector, and the issue has gone away!

I have no idea if pixel mode settings are supposed to affect vector settings but if so, I assume this is a bug. I’ve also moved Feathering back to 8 on pixel and toggled to vector again and the issue comes back again.

I will say that as far as I know I’m pretty sure I’ve always used the Freehand selection tool on vector mode up to this point and only had this issue until now. The issue also persisted even I tried updating to the latest version of Krita right before I tried making this thread.
