This concept art for my novel, but I decided to discard this design -.- This particular piece was created in 29th of November, 2022. At least it’s good for my portfolio ; P
It’s been a long journey of background style discovery, to be honest I love how much simplification I’ve done to my art style - lots of artists always disregard cartoons and semi-realistic cartoons because “it doesn’t look real” but honestly? I think it can be just as expressive when capturing emotions, feelings, thoughts and ideas. It’s kinda funny how my background work from now doesn’t look like this anymore
In regards to this piece, my advice to my younger self would be
“Please… don’t make rendered pieces like this if you’re not sure on the design, you’ll have to change lots of things throughout the whole process (making a mess in the final piece), make some sketches previously for what you have in mind first”
I remember I had fun with the brushes on this one, I always loved mixing lots of brushes that had nothing to do with one another, it gives it more “life” in my eyes. I had trouble with the perspective, I couldn’t figure out that slow turn these buildings have (the so-called “Apse”). The colours on the windows were also a headache : / I wanted a normal tint for those but I realized midway that’s not how some windows work in gothic churches (some have saturated colours to them), but I already had finished my work on the floor so… the result looks disjointed because of that XD and don’t even get me started on the lack of support in the outer walls of the church lol
Is this a piece of mine with lots of mistakes? Well… yeah. Pretty much. But I still feel proud of myself from back then and now. : ) Even with these mistakes in mind I can’t resist but to appreciate the colouring technique and whatnot
yoo! this looks really good! I always shy away from drawing architecture (It is deceptively hard), but I think your looks really nice! you worked hard on this, and it shows! This is definitely a piece to be proud of
Aw, thank you! I’m happy to hear you think it looks good and nice:D
I think background as a whole, whether natural landscape or urban/interior are worth trying out, for every artist! ^^
Here’s my journey on background art, to inspire you: I understand the feeling of shying away XD I always were like that when drawing backgrounds, I only dared to draw forests at first (those were really boring artworks of mine, they looked static and had no personality ; P - It’s a good thing there are lots of tutorials on this on the web nowadays XD back then there weren’t any online, and if there were they were pretty hidden and basic compared to today)
How I started was copying screenshots from irl shows and going outside to copy my surroundings : ) I always had in mind making them simple so I could inspire myself to do more and not give up background art.
Here’s my Hannibal practice (funfact! I drew it on Krita ^^):
A good starting point is doing the box exercise (always with one-point perspective for beginners), going back and forth with this exercise and those screenshot practices
If you want to give it a try and don’t know what to do, you’re stuck or want advice feel free to send me a message : ] I don’t mind helping people out
