Hi friends, maybe someone can help me with this question:
Is there a way to put a grid on a reference image?
I think it would be helpful for people who work from a reference image, but I don’t know if it exist in krita.
I don’t think there is.
You could try opening it as a working image in a new tab or subwindow and using the standard grid on it.
Thanks @AhabGreybeard ! That is a good alternative way.
Hi !
I’m digging this topic up (sorry) but i’ve tried your way and it works, but the problem isthat it is really constraining in terms of sizing…
For example on photoshop you can have one window full screen, and one other window hovering the drawing area, and when you paint on it it is OK
With Krita when you do that, once yo ustart painting on the drawing area of the window that is BELOW the document you are using as a reference image, it automatically focus on it, and put it in front of the reference image…
But this is the only way to have a grid on the reference image…
Would you happen to have another alternative ?
You can try working in subwindow mode.
This is activated in Krita under ‘‘Settings’’ >> ‘‘Configure Krita’’ >> ‘‘General’’ in the tab ‘‘Window’’. After selecting the mode, you need to confirm the dialog box with the OK button and then maybe¹ restart Krita.
There is the possibility to keep windows permanently above the other windows with the option “Stay on Top”.

¹ May depend on the OS, I only have tested this on Windows, where you don’t have to restart Krita.
Thanks @Wilfried123, and @Wilfried123 for your time and interest. I think the last one is the best solution. It’s even better than I had imagined. Using another window for the reference image I can put on this a grid, but also I can draw guides strokes by hand. It will be very useful for me.
Again, thanks for your help!
You could open the reference image, put a grid on it, do Tab for Canvas Only to get a large on-screen image, then take a screenshot to get a new reference image that has a grid on it.
That is also a good idea. Thank @AhabGreybeard , it’s nice to find your help!
Oh yes nice !
I didn’t knew there was a “Stay on top” button
Thank yo uvery much !
This look like a better way to do it, can you explain how i could do that ?
i didn’t got it very much reading your answer
I think @AhabGreybeard meant something like this:
Open your reference image in Krita, like an image you want to work on, then put a grid on it, after that press the Tab-Key, that’s the one above Caps Lock, to make this image with your grid on it full-screen, then make a screenshot of this full-screen-image and save it to your disk. Now you have a new reference image.
