Hard light not working

I cannot understand what is the problem. Previously, I calmly painted with color over a black and white sketch in a gray layer with the Hard Light mode. Now the color has become unpredictable. I don’t understand what’s going on and what I’m doing wrong.

Hi, can you share a screenshot of your layer stack?

Without much information, I can only guess your layer with “Hard Light” might be inside a group, and so, the blending mode doesn’t catches pixels from layers or groups bellow it.

This effect happens because blendning modes doesn’t spead outside of layer groups, and are ‘contained’ into the layer group…

If it is the case; a mechanism exist to have a ‘pass through’ the group: on the layer group in the Layer docker, press an icon of a wall with a little up arrow ↑. It will transform the group in a collection of layers, able to merge its content with other parts of the layer stack (under the group).

Another hypothesis might come from the colorspace of your document. Hard Light might be predictable only on sRGB/8bit documents (or layers).

Yes. The problem was in the group. Thank you very much!
