[Help] Flashback and failure to open caused by Krita color selector

Hi,I’m using krita 5.1.3, and I just tried to tick the "Color selector uses different colour space than image” option.

When I switched color models in the color space browser , it got stuck, then flashed back. When I tried to open krita, I found that only the startup picture appeared. After a few seconds, nothing would happen. And I waited two minutes, it still can’t be opened.

I don’t know what the reason is. Could it be that I changed the channel depth to 16 bits, but it can work when it’s 16 bits, krita just flashed back when I changed the color model.

Then I tried to restart the computer and install version 5.1.1, but it still failed to start. The startup picture and “loading resources” only appeared for a few seconds. I was afraid that my computer could no longer use krita. :sob: :sob: :sob:

Don’t panic, at the moment I’m busy, but in about 90 minutes I’ll be back and will walk you through your issue. And if you have luck, then perhaps another user isn’t busy now and can support you earlier.

I only have two CMYK profiles in the colour space browser but I’ve tried switching between them, with 8/16 bit variation and changing the Advanced Colour Selector settings with 8/16 bit variations and also creating new images with CMYK 8/16 bit profiles, in various combinations.
I had no problems.

Have you recently added a new colour profile that was involved with this?

Does the startup picture then vanish from the monitor and you can then use your computer normally for other applications, or does the startup picture stay there saying, “loading resources”?

You will be able to continue using krita when this problem is tracked down and fixed.

Edit:Add: The startup picture messages usually say “Adding resource types”, followed by “Loading Main Window”.
So, at which point does it stop?

@AhabGreybeard, I don’t have more ICC profiles for CMYK/Alpha either, @Hazel seems to be a profile addict (like I am a resource addict).

@Hazel: Regarding this statement, I have a question:

I don’t quite understand that, the “then flashed back”, but I guess it’s supposed to mean Krita terminated itself, or crashed, right?

What I found out in the meantime is that you are using Windows. Are you confident in using Windows and Windows Explorer?

Do you know how to use Windows Explorer to get to Krita’s configuration files and resource folder?

Michelist

@Michelist I’d suggest renaming the krita resources folder to krita-problem then running krita to see if it starts properly with new default resources.

If that works then further examination and operations on the ‘problem’ resources folder could be done.
If it doesn’t work then a similar thing can be tried with the kritarc configuration file.

Questions of the log file and any crash record could be dealt with after those crude and simple tests.

I thought it wasn’t possible to install an older version in place of a newer version just by using the installer .exe.
Did you install 5.1.1? Does it now say “5.1.1” on the startup image?

Thanks for your reply! I didn’t add any new color profile.

The startup picture venished from the monitor and I could use other application, the picture won’t stay very long, and the massage says"Adding resources types”, just a few seconds and it disappeared.

Haha, I just found it interesting, seeing the color changed on the selector.

Yes, you’re right.

I’m much used to using Windows, I haven’t tried other systems.

I konw where I installed krita, and I guess I can find the configuration files and resource folder. :thinking:But I was in my work place now, and the problem is on my computer in my home, I will check it again two hours later when I finish my work.

Good advice! I don’t remember if it was saying “5.1.1”, I will take your advice and try again when I’m home. :hugs:

The configuration files and the resources are not in the installation directory. I’ll try to prepare something in the meantime.

Well, then I will try to be back here in 2 hours, but I can’t promise it, that is sometimes a bit problematic with me to predict if I will be available at a certain time.

As @AhabGreybeard mentioned please give the log file to see why krita crashes and possible we can report it to developers. Once you have copied the log file. You can reset krita configuration. There is a shortcut to reset krita configuration before even opening it as mentioned in the documentation here - Krita FAQ — Krita Manual 5.2.0 documentation

Press and hold Shift + Alt + Ctrl while starting Krita. This should show a pop-up asking if you want to reset the configuration. Press yes to reset it.

So press and hold the above key combination while starting krita. it will ask and reset the configuration. If this method doesn’t work you can find the configuration files manually and the path for it is mentioned in the manual.

If you are not able to reset Krita by the tip of @raghukamath, then you can save the configuration files and the log files, in the folder
“c:\Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME\AppData\Local\”
and you can find the resource folder at
"c:\Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Krita".
In both cases you have to replace the part “YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME” with your Windows user name, i.e. the name you use to log in to Windows, then for instance it could look like “c:\Users\Hazel\AppData\Roaming\krita\”.

If you can’t find this folder path, then you usually can’t find the folder “AppData”, so you have to enable the view of hidden files and folders in Windows first. How to do this is explained in the screenshots at the end of this article.
Only when you can see this or have activated it now you can continue with the next section.

I would like to ask you to first look for the following files at the end of the following folder (not in a subfolder of it) “c:\Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME\AppData\Local\” and save them in a different location:
“kritarc”,
“kritadisplayrc”,
“kritashortcutsrc”,
“krita.log”,
“kritacrash.log”,
“krita-sysinfo.log”
But only if these files exist there (because not every of these files must exist (if you want you can save every file with krita in the name there, they are usually small and need little space)).

Following @AhabGreybeard’s hint, I now ask you to first go to the resource folder krita and rename it to krita-problem and then start Krita. This way we can find out if the resources are the cause.
(That would be this folder: "c:\Users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\krita").

If Krita then starts again we need to take a closer look at your folder renamed to krita-problem.

If Krita doesn’t start again, please go to the folder from which you previously backed up the files, like the “kritarc”. You have backed them up, right? If not, then make a backup of the above mentioned files!

After this backup rename the file “kritarc” to “kritarc.old”.
Now please start Krita again. Does Krita start now? Please tell us what happens.

Now, about the folder “AppData” (only in case you can not see this folder, if you can see it, you do not need the next things):

If you select your Windows-User folder in the folder bar of Windows Explorer (Point 1) and you can’t find the folder “AppData” among the existing folders on the right (Point 3), then you have to activate the view of hidden files and folders.

So, in case you can’t see the folder “AppData” in your Windows user folder with the Windows Explorer, then you have to open the rightmost tab in the top-bar on Windows Explorer, labeled “View” (Point 1)
(this is all translated from German and will have a label similar to this label in your language, it’s about to “View” or “Show” something).
Next, (at Point 2) you need to set the two checkmarks in the red highlighted area.
Now you can see the AppData folder (and all other hidden files and folders in the Windows Explorer) and you can proceed ↑.

In case you don’t understand something and don’t know what to do next, don’t hesitate to ask us for support. Please tell us what you have done so far and what happened or did not happen.

Wow, this was a fast solution!
:slightly_smiling_face:
Can you tell us what exactly was the issue?

Michelist

First I must say, you’re so nice and dependable!  :blush:Thanks so so much for your patient reply!!! :hugs:

My problem has been solved, and I want to tell the process. First I saw the answer from @raghukamath,then I started Krita5.1.1 and pressed and held the above key as the document asked, but No window poped up to ask me if I want to reset the configuration. :smiling_face_with_tear:
I attributed it to the version issue, so I installed version 4.4.0, and surprisingly I could start it smoothly, it remained the window and settings I set before, the color selector setting like:

I instantly unchecked “Color Selector Uses Different Color Space than Image” and I uninstalled 4.1.1 and re-installed 5.1.3 and—— it could be start smoothly

I must say it’s unconventional, but whoever fixes “the machine” is right!
:slightly_smiling_face:

I wish you a beautiful day and much fun with Krita, and always happy painting!

It’s good to know that it’s working again but there may be a problem in future.
If your initial actions in changing things did cause this problem (which shouldn’t have happened) then it could happen again.

When you find time, please try to recreate this problem and make a careful note of what you do that makes the problem happen.

I searched the configuration folder and I found “kritacrash” file, I opened it and this is part of the text document:

BTW, you’re very good at use Windows Explorer, and thank you again, I’ved learned a lot :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Thank you very much! I’ve solved my problem. :relieved: :relieved:
I found the “kritacrash” file, and I’ve copied those important filse in a folder, and I wonder how to report them to developers.

If you only knew!
I hate Windows Explorer and have been using Ghisler’s Total Commander since 1994, but in the beginning it was called Windows Commander. It is in my eyes the best file manager for Windows, there are two others that are quite good, for example I like XYplorer because it can also preview Krita files, just like Total Commander, but probably no other file manager is currently more versatile and extensible than Total Commander. I only use Windows Explorer because most users rely on this f…ing piece of sh…y software from Redmond.

The way to make a formal bug report is at the bug tracking site:
https://bugs.kde.org/ (sign up and login needed).

A formal bug report needs a description of how the problem is caused and that is not really available yet. I was unable to reproduce this problem from your description.

I’d suggest that you wait until you’ve tried to reproduce the problem and see if it happens again.

If you can’t do that then you could create a topic here in the Artists Feedback and Testing category and post the first few lines of the crash report and ask if anyone knows what it may mean.

That is my personal opinion and someone more on the development side might disagree with me.

I notice from your file listing that you are not showing file extensions in Windows File Explorer.
It’s a good idea to have it show file extensions as noted by @Michelist .

@Michelist Thank goodness for Linux

Yep, that’s a godsend.
Only far too few like this gift, are even afraid of it. I can not understand them, there is a distro for everyone!
