Help me improve eyelashes

Hello,

I am always struggling when it comes to painting human portraits and it is eyelashes, here is picture i did couple weeks ago. I know that for males you dont need luscious eyelashes but these i painted look horrible. Can someone help me, at least show how it would look better.

Nice painting!
When I was learning portraits, I was told to hint at the lashes, not paint each one. Here’s some info I found on Reddit:
“if you paint them (eyelashes), you wouldn’t paint them like individual strands of hair but as a single mass to imply the eyelashes.”

“without mascara, you don’t really notice individual lashes on a person unless you’re up close to their face.”

Here’s the page:

Thanks for reply, but does not that look unnatural to paint a mass?

I think it’s good advice. You can look at these portraits by Tony Yeh on Art Station; he paints eye lashes mostly as a single shape, with barely any individual hairs.

@Avalander Precisely! This is the way I was taught. And that is how the artists in renaissance times did it too. (Cézanne, Rembrandt to make a few as well as 1800’s modern artists such as John Singer Sargent.)
Also, study this portrait painted by the artist, Velasquez:

No eyelashes, simply a suggestion that they’re there.

@roberts.draws not exactly… See my comment to Avalander.

I agree with the advice you’re getting already.

One more thing I would add: Painting is mostly about observation and learning to paint what we see, not what we think we know is there.

Start looking at people’s eyes when you are ten feet away from them (3 meters). Can you actually see lashes or do you see something else?

Thank you all, i now kinda understand it.

I would also add that lashes start on the outside of the rim of the lid, whereas on this pic you have them coming straight out from the eyeballs.
