Hi, I’ve been using Krita for a few years now and I like it very much, but I feel like my digital art isn’t good enough. I don’t have a lot of experience with digital art or how to actually make it look well. I have issues shading or painting things correctly. I don’t really know how to go about it so is there a way to make it look better?
Have you tried searching for ‘digital shading tutorial’ or ‘digital shading techniques’ or just ‘digital shading’ on YouTube?
(I know it takes time to find a good one but they are there).
If you can post a link to a picture or pictures that show the sort of effect you’re trying to achieve, that would be a start so that someone can give you advice or a link to a specific tutorial.
Hello,
Maybe you should try to look for David Revoy’s tutorials. He made some on shading techniques and other good stuff. I think you will find him easily on YouTube, just type his name.
But as @AhabGreybeard said there are plenty of shading tutorials out there.
Hope that helps a bit
Proko’s tutorial on shading was pretty good if I remember correctly. If you want to try and go for a more realistic look, understand how light hits a surface with volume, and then try to paint that! You can always come back to stylized later, and equipped with a great tool at your disposal!
I think the cel-shaded style you’re using is actually a good place to start.
Try taking that approach a bit further; you can plot where your light source is (might need a bigger canvas) and then map out where you think the light will fall across what you’re rendering. You’re currently using three tones (shadow-mid-highlight) so increase that to say five steps to begin with. Gradually inrease the complexity as you get more confident, and then maybe introduce some blending.
Flat shading can be very useful as you can easily select an area that’s flat shaded and paint through it (on a new layer) without disturbing the surrounding area. Great for sculpting forms using quick gestural strokes!
Definitely stick with the colour practice, but you can also try doing just value studies (in greyscale) to help increase your sensitivity to form.
Hope that’s helpful. If not I’ll try to demonstrate visually when I’m less busy!
