You can use pattern files that have the look and feel of real paper, canvas, cardboard, wood, whatever else.
@RamonM just published a new set of ready-made templates which you can use instead of fiddling around with pattern files and setting them up correctly, you will find the link to those templates below the video where he describes them. You need at least the ZIP-File and the Bundle to be able to install these templates correctly.
Here is a little description I made for another user on how to install them:
By the way, if you are interested in more templates, @RamonM just published a pack of twelve new canvas templates named “Papers V1.0 - Classics” to get via Krita’s YouTube-Channel where he presents them in a new video. There you have to enlarge the video description with a click on more and follow the link below “DOWNLOAD: TEMPLATES :”, then you need to download at least the bundle and the ZIP-File.
To install the Papers V1.0 - Classics, you need to install the bundle → then unzip the archive → in Krita doSettings→Manage Resources...there click onOpen Resource Folder→ in the now opening dialog (a file manager window) copy or move the whole unzipped folderPapers V1.0 - Classicsinto the foldertemplates→ restart Krita and find the templates in the newGroupcalledPapers V1.0 - Classics. Happy painting!
You may also be interested in another set of ready-made templates from him, Fine Arts Papers Templates, that you install in nearly the same way. Nearly, because here you do not need to install a bundle to use them, just unzip the downloaded file Fine Arts Papers Templates.zip and copy the unzipped folder Fine Arts Papers Templates into the folder templates → restart Krita and find the templates in the new group called Fine Arts Papers Templates.
And here is an older set named Smart Canvas Templates for Krita where you have to open the KRA-Files contained in the ZIP-File in Krita like you open a document of yours, but here, before you do even a stroke on them, you should do File → Create Template From Current Image in Krita to save them as templates, this way you will have them preserved for the future and can use them whenever you like. You could save them in one of the groups you created with the actions above to organize them.
The same can be done with these two files:
Crayons Paper
and
Simple DinA4 fibers toned paper
Just download and open in Krita to then save them directly as templates as described above.
