how do I get a canvas to draw on

In case you believe you can paint here right in your browser, I have to disappoint you, this is a forum.
But if you use a PC with Linux, macOS or Windows, respectively an Android tablet or a Chromebook, you can download Krita from the link below or in the Play Store.
That is, because Krita is a program that has to be installed on a device using one of the above-mentioned operating systems. If you have Krita installed on one of these devices, then we will be happy if we can support you making your first steps into the wonderful world of Krita.
It is then important, that you tell us the operating system you use, and a few more things. There you’ll probably want to start a new topic in the General Questions category, but we will see.
