How do I get Krita to reuse the current brush thumbnail?

This is driving me mad at the moment. Basically, every time I try to save a brush I just edited, Krita automatically defaults to the eraser thumbnail. Pressing ‘Load Existing Thumbail’ does nothing. Not a big problem when I’m setting up new brushes but super annoying when I’m trying to make fine edits on older ones. I swear this wasn’t an issue before but I don’t remember changing anything/doing anything different. My currently selected brush isn’t an eraser. Any suggestions, please?

Hello @ssspeee and welcome to the forum

Which version of krita are you using and where did you get it from?
Which operating system are you using?

Do the other four options for selecting a brush preset thumbnail image work?

If you do Overwrite Brush Preset (you don’t need to complete it, you can press Cancel),
do all five option buttons work?

If you go into the settings and change the Cursor Icon to something different, them Quit krita and restart it, is that change maintained?

I’m scratching my head about this and I’m thinking about suggesting that you force a rebuild of the resources database by Quiting then deleting the resources database file.

I have to leave now but we’ll see if anyone else has any other ideas.

Hi Ahab, thanks for your reply and apologies for getting back to you so late - I couldn’t replicate this with any consistency but it’s started happening again.

I’m using Krita 5.1.5, got it off of krita.org, and I’m on Windows 10.

All of the five buttons work. If i clear the thumbnail and press ‘Load Existing Thumbnail’, it loads the Eraser again.

If I restart Krita everything starts working fine again - this bug usually happens after using Krita for a while.

I made a post about this on Reddit and it looks like someone else has the same issue.

Cheers

Can you establish common factors with the Reddit user?
e.g. krita version number, operating system, mouse or tablet stylus, etc.
(I don’t have this problem with the 5.1.5 appimage on Linux.)

You could try making a backup copy (for later restoration) of all your config files and the entire resources folder, then delete them all and start krita to get a fresh default working installation - to see if that changes anything.

Hi Ahab,

Apologies, I haven’t gotten in touch with the Reddit user but I have managed to find a way to consistently replicate this issue. Looks like it’s caused by the ‘Switch to Previous Preset’ brush switch shortcut. If I use it and then try to edit a brush, Krita will default the thumbnail to whatever my previous brush’s thumbnail was. I seem to be able to work around this by switching my brushes manually via the brush menu before editing a brush.

Hope this is of some use.
Cheers

This sounds like a ‘minor’ bug with an easy (if inconvenient) workaround.
I suggest that you make a formal bug report at https://bugs.kde.org/ then post a link to the report in a reply here.
