How do I Swirl/Twirl and Smudge?

How do I Swirl/Twirl and Smudge, please? This is the technique I would use in Photoshop to create a tie-dye type effect but I can’t find a means to accomplish this in Krita. I’ve seen mention of a Deform Brush Engine that may accomplish it but can’t find that anywhere, either.

Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome to the forum

The Brush Presets docker has a search box at the bottom and if you type ‘deform’ or ‘distort’ in there you’ll see some brush presets that use the Deform Brush Engine.
Their exact names give an idea of what they do so you can try them to see.

If you’re using one of those brush presets, you can open it up in the brush editor. You get this by pressing the Edit Brush Settings icon on the Toolbar at the top or by pressing F5.
There you can adjust and change all its properties, especially the Deform Options. Those have a very wide range of possibilities.

If you make something really cool/useful, you can save it with the Save New Brush Preset button to create your own named personal/custom brush preset.

There are also some ‘blur’ brush presets that you could try.

Thank you! How do I tell that the brush uses the Deform Brush Engine?

In the brush editor, it says which brush engine they use at the top.

Oh, OK…thought you meant the brush preview panel. So, those all seem like I can accomplish the smudge effect that way but how do I swirl/twirl first? In Photoshop, it’s like Filter > Distort > Twirl - I don’t see an equivalent here. Thanks so much!

If you open the brush editor for a deform Engine brush, you’ll see a list of properties. One of those properties is ‘Deform Options’.
If you click that you’ll get the Deform Options page showing all the various options for different types of deformation and various other controls for deformation.
Play with them, change them, see what happens to the brush when you do that.

If you want Smudge, then you need the Colour Smudge Engine. Try typing ‘blur’ in the brush presets docker search box.
