How is migrating the kritarc file normally supposed to work? 'Cause it's not working for me

Hello. I’m trying to migrate my settings from one Linux computer to another. Between the two computers, I have tried four different ways of installing Krita:

Via the GUI software catalog in SteamOS 3. I believe this is a flatpack.
Via the GUI software catalog in Zorin OS. This is a snap pack.
Via apt.
As the appimage file from the official Krita website.

Of these, only one of them has it’s “kritarc” settings file in the place that the documentation says it should be, ~/.config: the appimage. Snap, what I’d call the most user-oriented of the methods, actually prevents you from replacing the kritarc file at all.

I’m trying to move my settings from a SteamOS 3 machine, installed with method #1, to a new Zorin machine. I’m willing to install krita through any of the latter three methods, but I tried all three and none seemed effected by replacing the file. Could it be that the few settings that I changed in the first installation (mainly to do with brushes on the pop-up palette) just aren’t represented in the settings brought along in the kritarc file?

Replicating these preferences in the new installation wouldn’t be too hard, but I don’t want to get into the habit of using Krita in a way that makes migration hard. And I’m trying to get better at Linux and I want to know why this isn’t working.

I think I have a partial answer for you.

When it comes to Linux, the only official installation (and the recommended one) is via appimage from krita.org. This is because the distro versions (like flatpak) often have problems created by the folks that make them available to Linux users.

To preserve all your settings and resources, these are the folders/files that need to be considered:

  1. Contents of the resource folder (find its location in Settings > Manage Resources > Open Resource Folder)
  2. kritarc
  3. kritadisplayrc
  4. kritashortcutsrc

I hope something in here is helpful. I have no experience with Steam installations or I would have provided the locations for the other resources mentioned.

Alright, yes, I think that answers my question. Thank you.

For future reference, Steam OS has a normal package-manager store for flat-packs, separate from Steam. That’s what I was referring to.

The appimage is the simplest of all and using it gives you full control over all aspects of using krita.
Also, if migrating to a new computer, you should migrate to an account with the same username or there will be complications that require you do do editing of the kritarc file to replace some occurrences of {previous username} with {new username}.
